I can palm block fine when playing one string at a time. the issue arises when I try to block when I am pinching 2 strings. thumb and 2nd finger works best, but is not always convenient. If you were to play the lick below very quickly using palm blocking only what fingering would you use ?
currently I am using Thumb on 6th string, 1st finger on 5th, and 2nd finger on 4th but finding it hard to palm block while doing this. Obviously I need to practice a LOT more but I am just wondering if palm blockers use different fingering (like thumb and 2nd finger for the whole lick except the end). let me know ! many thanks !

I just tried this little exercise. At speed the 6th string is being
pick blocked as I reach for the next, two string grip.
It is an unconscious action. I hope someone else chimes in,
like to know if others do the same.

Over time I think you will be applying pick and palm blocking at the same time. Watch some of Buddy Emmons videos and Curly Chalker. This will take some time, but eventually you'll start doing it without thinking about it. |

Hey Karen. Check out the video on the Curly Chalker thread, I think Chris Ivey posted the video. Anyway it's got a good shot of his right hand and he definitely is palm and pick blocking plus it's some of the best playing I've heard in a while.
Can't wait to see you in December and I'm working hard on that steel guitar polka! It ought to be fun. |

Easiest way for me is pick block everything leaving T on 6th, 1 on 5th and 2 on 4th. _________________ Bob |

Thanks everyone. Ben that video is most excellent !! Bob I have also been pick blocking it and find this to be fairly simple, but just cant seem to palm block it correctly. I do use both techniques when playing, mostly pick blocking I think, but I love the sound of great palm blocking and have been trying to limit myself to this during practice sessions just to get more comfortable with it. I'd like it to become more natural to me instead of something I have to think about specifically to do. I know that some palm blockers primarily use the thumb and second finger when speed picking licks, and am wondering how they would approach that particular lick with the pinches... _________________ Emmons, Franklin, Mullen |
