I recently purchased an Emmons LeGrande III pedal steel. This guitar plays and sounds great. I am curious if any of the LeGrande III owners, past or present, could tell me what tuning chart they found to be the best for this guitar. Any advice will certainly be appreciated. |

Carl with all due respect.Newmans chart allows for cabinet drop. Also last time I looked the Emmons site only offered one tuning chart for both the LII and LIII.This makes no sense to me.
I tune mine stright up 440 except for the 3rds and a few other things.I tune the E's to F about 12 cents flat.Just my 2 cents and that's about what it's worth. ..bb |

On my LeGrande III I too tune to straight up 440. Not having to deal with cabinet drop makes a "huge" difference.

What kind of tuners are you guys using? I have a Boss that I have used for sometime. I will try the straight up 440 and see how it works out. This steel does stay in tune and sounds great. I had been using the Newman tuning chart for a long time but felt it was not working for me on this guitar. |

Bobby,
Your point is partly true and astute.
Here is the situation as I see it. Jeff's chart places the E's and C's (C6) at 442.5. Now the question is; WHY shift (sharp) a full 2.5 cycles? Is it because of cabinet drop? I have never seen a PSG with any where near 2.5 cycles of cabinet drop. That is a full 10 Cents!!
So why does Jeff shift that far? Yes, some of it may be due to cabinet drop. But still I do not see cabinet drop being the major reason for it. I believe the MAJOR reason for the shift has to do with the fact that Jeff's chart is based on a JI form of tuning; rather than ET.
IF it was an ET based chart, then I do NOT believe the shift would be near that much. Also IF it was based on ET and there was no cabinet drop, I believe the E's and C's would be 440 on a LeGrande II. With cabinet drop, it would still be very close to 440 IMO.
My point is this. That even when the E's are held constant on a LeGrande III, it would STILL, (IMO) be necessary to shift the numbers way sharp, albeit maybe not the full 2.5HZ. This due to the fact that our thirds in JI are soooo flat to other fixed tuned instruments such as the keyboard and regular guitar.
But this is OK. Let's say that it was 442 instead. Or say 441.5. Then still use Jeff's chart; only shift every other number by that amount of shift. IE:
1. 442.5=442
2. 438=437.5
3. Etc, etc.
Thanks friend for posting about the LeGrande III.

Carl I see your point. However I've seen, owned several LeGrandes that drop 7 to 10 cents.I consider a 5 cent drop good for any guitar. This is not to say that some don't have less drop. Regards ...bb |

Bobby,You stated that you saw a tuning chart for the LeGrande II and III on the Emmons site. I have looked at their site and cannot find a tuning chart. Please advise me where you saw it on their website. |
