Does anyone have a C6th arrangement of Cherokee they'd be willing to share?

Hi Chad,
I'm in the middle of moving, or I'd take this on. Maybe I can scratch something out over the next couple of days.
Do you have a half tone raise on your 4th string ?
(A-Bb ?)
What do you use for your 1st string, D or G ? I guess it won't matter.
Give me a little time, and I'll do this for you in sections.
I can warn you now, it's a two-footer !

Your sterling reputation precedes you. I, too, would be very interested in a copy of whatever you come up with. Please advise.

Respectfully,

Crowbear, I believe that is Bob Wills"s Cherokee Maiden...The thread started on Ray Noble's Cherokee as recorded on Buddy Emmons "Steel Guitar Jazz"..I've posted a short tab of it that I learned from a tab course by Doug Jernigan sold in the early 1970's .Hope it helps!.JS

Ok, here's what I know about Cherokee: Written, as John said, by Ray Noble and was first a major hit for Charlie Barnet's orchestra. It was a favourite jam tune and chord sequence for Charlie Parker, whose amazing "Koko" and "Warmin' Up A Riff" are improvisations over the Cherokee chord progression.

So, I'm nowhere near a steel, but I've written this out as far as the bridge, and I hope it's ok. There are optional ways to play alot of these chords, but this is what I'd do if I just sat down to play it.
To spare endless bar lines, each bar is actually two bars, strictly speaking.
I've proof read it twice, but that's no guarantee Smile I'll check it again when I have an instrument in front of me... this week has been forsaken in favour of moving myself and a couple of pianos into a new pad.
After you've had a chance to absorb this "A" part, I'll write out the bridge. It's an excercise in II-V-I changes.

John,

You know that I am a dedicated fan to your knowledge and wizardry. Thanks for doing this tab for all of us.

I have a tab of this someplace that I got from Chuck Lettes many moons ago. I learned it then, but have not played it for years. This'll get me started back on it.

Best personal regards,

Bud

Here is a link to a couple of the masterpieces of 20th century music - Charlie Parker playing "Koko", which is an improvisation over the "Cherokee" changes. It is preceded by an (unrelated) introduction with Dizzy Gillespie, and the improvisation over these changes begins approximately 26 seconds in:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rMiD8UUcd0

Astoundingly, there is a live version from a Carnegie Hall concert which is considerably faster than this.

Another Charlie Parker-Cherokee-related gem: This is "Warmin' Up a Riff" which was really a studio sound check, which is why is fades in, toward the end of the B section:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FuN1vZPp3k

Again, it is based on the Cherokee chord pattern. If you listen at 2:18, you'll hear Parker inserting a quotation from the recent Spike Jones hit "Cocktails for Two", which he then warps around the chords and repeats... and you'll hear Gillespie (playing piano) burst out laughing at the genius and humour of the man.

If anyone would like to tab that out, I'd love a copy. Smile
- John
