First some background: I've been playing about 1 1/2 yrs, so I still consider myself a beginner. I have a live teacher in Larry Behm and he's been a tremendous help. I had an opportunity to join a casual band way before I was ready, but I went for it. I more or less copy some breaks from original songs to the best of my ability, but a lot of time I just noodle around over the chord changes. I was struggling with palm blocking so got Right Hand Alpha and I love it. I like it so much I want to move on to another Newman course. I mostly would like to learn more about what to play when trying to improvise for a song. I'm not necessarily looking for licks; rather the thought process of how to decide what to play. I want to get past just playing the chord changes. I'm leaning toward starting the Up from the Top series, but given the above would Techniques be better?
Thanks, in advance

"Up From The Top" would offer you a good way to learn the neck and get a good look at what you can play with just the minimum of pedals and knees on the E9th.
Just my 2 cents, YMMV. |

I agree with DG. Jeff was a great teacher. His courses teach the patterns that you need to know to play chords, melody and improvs. His Woodshed Workshop courses are also a great way build on the things you learn in the Up From The Top series. |

i started with the up from the top series, and it gave me a pretty firm foundation for scales and playing in pockets. most of what i've learned since then as far licks fits right into what i learned from up from the top, which helps when you're adapting a lick to fit chord changes and songs. every once in a while i pull out the books and go over some of the material and it gives me a new perspective on connecting different pockets. the series isn't cheap, but it is very thoughtful. |
