I am trying up grade my pedal board and would like to get rid of my old tuner, it just takes up too much real estate, anyone have any ideas what would be small and also be ok with the pedal steel?

Have a look at Peterson tuners.
They do a "stomp box" and also have models which will clip to the leg of Your pedal steel.
The strobo flip is probably the most popular model. They have pre sets for pedal steel and can also be programmed to Your own settings.
Good luck.

I have a Boss TU-12 attached to the leg of my steel and I get along quite well with that. I also have a fancy Peterson tuner but don't use it.

Peterson is great! If you are on a budget, get the the app (I have it on Iphone) for about $10. Works great also.

I use a Petersen Stroboflip, but I would trade it in any day for a pretty woman to tune it for me.

I have a Peterson Strobo+HD. It works well and is not as expensive as the older models. It's especially good around noise.
Most of the time I just use a tuning fork.

I like the strobo hd a lot. Usb charged, excellent battery life, great for other instruments as well. I agree with the 'by ear' argument, unless you plan to ever perform with others.

Like Bob said, I like the Sonic Research ST-200. Has 5 preprogram banks, same size as a standard foot pedal. I also have a Peterson flip that I like too but the St200 stays on my pedal board. I have standard Emmons volume pedals and I have put a second output like Randy Beavers suggested. I believe the now replaced it with a St-300 that is smaller yet.
Fred, of course your right on tuning by ear, but most situations I'm in, the drummer and bass player won't give you time to tune by ear. At home in my practice room I have a Korg DT-1 that I just get an E or C note on and tune the rest by ear.

I have owned and used many tuners. I started with the TU-12 many years ago via Jeff Newman and still use it. However, lately I have been using a tuner from guitarfetish.com that has a huge read readout and is very stable. It sells for $45.00 and is true bypass.

Cleartune app on my phone. Program-able and cheap. Apparently the newer android version doesn't allow fro programming; my iPhone 5s version still does, though.
In a pinch I can get an E or an A from the tuner on my Zoom MS50g.
