I caught Dirks Bentley opening for George a couple of weeks ago. Most of you I'm sure are familar with his first hit, "What Was I Thinking" with the head lick on the dobro. Well the steel player in the band pulled out something I've never seen before to play that song. It was a six string dobro or lap steel, but had a square solid body, and sat on top of the back neck of his D10.
Has anyone done or seen this? It was pretty cool!!

That was Gary Morse. I think its a lap steel run through a POD or Match-Bro. |

Yup is was Gary, I'm terrible about remembering names. I'd love to know about a POD setting that would give you that kind of tone.

It may be a Marrs Cat-Can. (6 string lap steel with a cat can for a resenator) They came out in the 80's I think. Mr. Duane Marrs made & probably can make one. There been quite a few for sale in the buy & sell section $250 or so. |

I don't know the song but if it's a dobro sound, nah, there's nothing on the Pod to get you there (Pod2.3 into a power amp was my #1 rig for a spell.) The Goodrich MatchBro, though, is an extraordinary unit. Costly and no longer being made but it really delivers. Won't touch an acoustic resoguit side by side but once you start amplifying a resoguit the comparison gets a bit closer. |

I never could get a good dobro sound out of a POD, and MatchBros are a bit out of my price range at the moment.

Autry is correct. Gary plays those fabulous "dobro" runs on a Marrs "Cat-Can".
Keep on pickin'!

I don't think you have a feed back problem
with the Marrs Cat-Can, like you would if you were try to play a live Dobro.

The Marrs Cat Can is currently being re-designed by Marvin Fluger of Fluger resonators and Duane Marrs of Sho-Bud fame, who originally invented the Cat-Can. I was just down in nashville this week with Marvin Fluger who was dropping off one of his incredible resonators to a prominent Nashville studio musician. We stopped into Duane Marr's shop. The newly re-designed Marrs/Fluger Cat Can looks like a mini Weissenborn with a cover plate. It has a hollow neck for tremendous volume projection, sounds exactly like an acoustic dobro, has a George L magnetic pickup, and gets absolutely NO feedback. Gary Morse from the Dierks Bentley band will be playing the first production piece in two months. Its a genious design. It totally solves the feedback dilema for dobro players. Its very exciteing watching this new Cat Can go from design to production. Marvin Fluger's phone number is 716-691-7505 if anyone is interested. Duane Marrs number is 615-868-5344. Fellows, the old Cat-Can is still available. New interest has devloped recently, and we are gearing up to produce it again. It is on piece of hard maple board and covered in your choice of formica. This makes it easy to set on top of your back neck, like Gary does. Tommy White gave much input to Duane, while experimenting with many types of cans. We use "Little Friskeys" or "Calcan" for the resonator.
Gary Carter used one with Randy Travis when "Forever and Ever" was a big hit and Tommy Spurlock used it on many Highway 101 records. It is one of Paul Worley's favorite things. When building my Marrs guitar several years ago, I built mine where a C6th neck would typically be. I designed "cam-pullers" that pulled from the key-head, as not to disturb the can and sound. This has worked great for slide guitar and a Pedabro sound. I used it with Clay Davidson on "Autin City Limits" and many shows with the Wilkinsons. Seemed to be a logical plan for roadwork if you don't know or need the C neck. There is a story I believe on our site www.duanemarrs.com . The Cat-Can is going for around 700.00 with a case. Many thanks to Gary for all of the inquiries. Jeff |

Gary has a CD available here.
His work on Dwight Yoakham's "Tomorrows Sounds Today" is also outstanding. I especially like "What Do You Know Above Love". Cajun flavored Mooney'isms! |
