Hey Stephan,
Not to be to critical. On "The Girl From Ipanema", I wasn't sure if you were trying to play the melody or not? On the "A" sections you played something that resembled the melody and on the "B" section you didn't play any melody?
Some advice for you. If you were trying to harmonize the melody, I suggest you learn to play the melody cleanly first before trying to harmonize. Having the melody worked out gives you a sense of the melodic and harmonic song structure. Read the sheet music that you posted or listen to recordings.
If you were just playing chords I suggest you play simpler. Listen to Jobim recordings and listen to the nylon string guitar's comping patterns.
Here's a pattern I use all the time. Play all notes of the chord on each beat.
Play the rhythms in parenthesis.

You have a good start. Keep it up.

Hey Stephan - great tune that deserves to be recaptured from its elevator music associations. Thanks for bravely sharing your explorations. A lot of us here dig standards. I would agree with Michael that I hear some really nice ideas here but a little more structure would be helpful. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |

Thanks Guys.
Yeah I only payed the A part once as opposed to twice and as far as melody I was seeing if it would be possible to come up with something while still chording as opposed to looking for a voicing just yet.
Voicing would be perfect but sometimes they sound weak without a band to the average listener.
I'll work on it though thanks for the feedback. _________________ Stefan

stefan. you have a distinct approach to your sound and playing. when the ipanema track came on...sounded like a jazz guitar and not a steel playing. very cool. |

I thought the jazz box sound was great, too. Just a hint of a slide gave it away. This is one of my favorite tunes, and I'd love it if Bill Hatcher would have a go at it, and post a sound clip. 😊 _________________ Clinesmith consoles D-8/6 5 pedal, D-8 3 pedal & A25 Frypan, Pettingill Teardrop, & P8 Deluxe. |

The rio dance club groove on this version by Crystal Waters turned my head around to what this song can be other then the Getz/Gilberto version I'd always loved. I would love to hear early 90s Lindley playing the melody over this groove.

You've got a real good right hand touch for this kind of playing.
Sometimes when you extend chords you have to be careful, like on the very last chord you hit--it can't make up its mind whether it's a I chord or IV chord, because in the upper voices you've added an 11 and 13, which are the root and 3rd of the IV chord. A nice extension there would have been the #11, but you would have to pull off some kind of magic, like a string pull, to make it happen with your tuning. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Wow. Great stuff.
Hey, in my opinion, BIAB is not the way to go. I'd much rather hear your chords and phrasing and that's it. No fake backing tracks.
I feel like you are making a stronger statement with your tuning that way. |

A #11 is pretty easy to do on point. I actually use it more because a lot of jazz uses it and they avoid the dissonance of the straight 11. But funny i actually hear that and see it as a monk thing. It adds an outside feeling without being too clean. Jazz that is too clean kind of bores me as it feels predictable.
Example is Tal Farlow. Awesome guitarist but I always find it hard to listen to a whole album. George Benson plays outside a lot as does the awesome Stanley Jordan. _________________ Stefan

Oh and I actually mute behind the bar with my left most of the time rather than the karate chop with the right. I use that for chords but it is too slow for soloing I find. _________________ Stefan
