The other night my Fessy D10 "threw a rod" and the high G# 3rd string no longer raises. I'd appreciate any suggestions from the SGForumites on how to fix this. Happy Labor Day week-end to everyone! |

Turn the guitar upside down, and actuate the pedal that raises the 6th string. You should see the rod inside the third string bellcrank. Loosen the nylon adjuster until the rod can extend past the bellcrank. Locate the slot that the rod used to be in ( it should be darker than the other slots). Put the rod back in the slot and re adjust the nylon adjuster so that there is just a small amount of slack. The string should be close to correct pitch. Re tune the third string both open and pulled you should back in business. If you have to have alot of slack to tune it, move the rod down one slot and try it there |

What exactly do you mean " threw a rod"? Did the rod break? Did it fall out of the guitar. Did it fall out of the bellcrank? After looking at the bottom of the guitar and seeing any problem, I would check to see if the nylon tuner nut is stripped by using one from another string change. If the rod fell out of the bellcrank, I would suspect a bad nylon tuner. After all, the rod would have to become 'longer' for the hook on the rod to move enough for the rod to fall out. The only way I see that happening is with the nylon tuner being stripped, allowing the rod to extend past the bellcrank. That's barring any problem with the cross rod and bellcrank. A loose bellcrank will cause that. But I think the Fessy I worked on had square cross shafts. It's been a while since I worked on it. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Forgot to say, look in the changer for string ball end. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Playing for 55 years and still counting. |

to successfully play pedal steel you must get a basic idea of the mechanics involved. it's mostly linkage. you must look at it, assess the function and where a malfunction has occurred. |

Once you get the rod put in the bellcrank and adjusted to proper pitch, buy some small rubber O rings and use one to secure each rod to a bellcrank. Not a big deal but this happens with the Fessy bellcranks and pull rods sometimes, if one gets out of adjustment. |

I first checked for a broken ball-end in the changer and then switched out a nylon tuner as you suggested, Richard Sinkler. You were correct, sir: the nylon tuner for the 3rd string was indeed stripped. Quick question: where's the best place to purchase more replacement nylon tuners?
As to your question, the rod acually fell out of the bellcrank. It's back in now, and I would like to try Billy Carr's idea of the small O-rings over the bellcranks to keep the linkage intact.
As of now, I've got both my G#-A raises back to where they sound all right. I am headed back to Amarillo, TX for another go-round this coming weekend.
I appreciate all the helpful responses and words of wisdom!
