I am curious for all who play an Emmons Legrande what tuning chart you find works best for you. I read on the forum one time where one gentleman tunes straight 440 and others use a tempered tuning. I have been using a Jeff Newman chart but it sounds different to me on this steel compared to the Mullen I had. I am looking for any info and would be greatly appreciated. This forum is such a blessing to be able to get help from other steelers in all areas of the instrument. Thanks Bob for this forum....Paul King

Paul,

Jeff's tuning chart is a good starting point. Once there, you may find often that some notes will have to be plus or minus what Jeff gives to sound the same on different steels. This is due to many many factors. Too numerous to list here. But some of those factors are the reason you described when comparing Jeff's chart to an Emmons respect to a Mullens.

No two steels tune up the same so those charts will only get you close.Get that 'a 'string in and tune your others off it Then when it sounds good, make your own chart with your tunner when it sounds right to fit your steel.

Paul, I have the LegrandeII, and I use tempered tuning. 440 does not work on my steel.

I play a '93 LeGrande and use Jeff Newmans chart with the E's at 442.5 Hz. I "baseline" tune to Jeff's chart, but then I fine tweak by ear. Works good for me.

Wayne,

With much sincere respect, 440 IS a tempered tuning. Any tuning except JI (which is beatless and the way most steel players tune) is tempered.

Also, 440 works on ANY steel for players like Bill Stafford, Buddy Emmons (now) and Weldon Myrick (now).

True, most (including me) can't stand it, but that is the way they tune; along with many in the musical world at large.

Roger-that Carl. Let me restate. What I should have said is I use the Newman tuning for both necks on my LeGrande. I used to tune to 440, but it sounded terrible. I mean bad. Matter of fact Carl, I thought my LeGrande was a piece of junk until I started using the Newman tuning. Now, my Legrande has excellent tone. Especially when someone else is playing it.
