I finally got a new(used)steel. It is an S10 Carter double frame with pad. Cool guitar. I would like to change the knee levers to the Carter standard tuning. I have never done this as I am new to pedal steel. It looks like I should move the bell crank on the cross-bar to enable pulls on either high or low. My question is, how do I deal with the tuning nuts on the endplate. Do I remove the tuning nut first, then remove the rod? It's hard for me to be clear on something I know nothing about! Please bear with me.
Thanks for your help |

The answer to one of your questions is that, yes, you unscrew the nylon tuning nut at the end plate so that you can unhook the rod at the bell crank. To answer further questions about changing knee lever setups, you will have to get more specific about what the lever currently does, and what you want it to do. Knee lever changes are a little more complicated and nonstandard, because the critical placement of the lever may require it to relay its pull to a nearby crossrod, and because right pull levers and left pull levers have different mechanisms. |

Hey Kevin,
I don't know where in West Va. Kearneysville is but if you're not too far from Virginia, take I-64 into Va. and go to Billy Cooper's Steel Shop in Orange. It's after Staunton about 30 miles or so off of the interstate. He's an expert and can set it up so it works like new in any copedant you'd like. You can call him at (540)854-5940 or his website I believe is www.billycoopermusic.com He has anything you'd need for the steel guitar in stock....Have a good 'un, JH

Yes,
1. Remove the nylon tuner completely and set aside.
2. Detach that pull rod at its bellcrank location. NOTE which hole it was in. IMPORTANT.
3. Remove the pull rod from the left end of the guitar and mark it and lay aside. Again note the hole the rod went thru in the changer finger. IMPORTANT.
4. Do this to all pulls on the knee levers you are going to switch around.
5. Loosen the screw that holds the bellcrank on the cross rod.
6. Reposition it in the place where it is located on the other crossrod. Retighten it.
7. Do this on all the other nylon tuners, pull rods and bellcranks that apply.
8. Take one of the appropriate pull rods you removed and push it thru the appropriate changer finger hole you noted above. Do this from the left of the guitar.
9. Reattach the pull rod to the appropriate bell crank in the hole you noted above.
10. Screw on the nylon tuner till its about a 1/16" from touching the changer finger.
11. Repeat for all other rods and nylon tuners.
12. Retune the changes.
NOTE: When noting holes in the changer and the bellcrank, remember the holes FOLLOW the change. So, if your 4th string lower was in the top hole in the changer (as viewed from the top of the guitar) and in the bottom hole in the bell crank, then do this EXACT thing on the other knee lever you are switching to.
IF, by chance you are making changes, IE, you are not just switching around exactly, what two knee levers do; rather you are adding, removing or changing pulls, I strongly urge you to seek professional help. Or call Carter Guitars.
May Jesus bless you in your quests,

Thanks for all the great help! Yeah, I have the current copedant charted and the new one on a chart. I guess I'm a little afraid to screw it up. I do live near Ernie Pollock and Billy Cooper. Both are about 2-1/2 hours from me. I am going to be scheduling lessons with Ernie Pollock and was going to see if he could help me. It just freaked me out to look at the darned tuning nuts. I think because there is a knee that pulls on two areas of the endplate. I don't know, but I'm guessing it's the half-stop. Steels are really confusing to guitar players... Thanks again!

Robert, it's a small world! Thanks for helping out. Being new to steel is something. Don't want to mess up the works.
Good to see you are from Hedgesville! If you ever need anything, let me know.
