Hobbies outside steel guitar

Post by Tom Gorr »

Curious to know what sort of hobbies besides steel guitar are out and about in the forum community.

I would say my other two hobbies are fly fishing and prospecting (gold panning).... precious few chances to get away to do that stuff it seems.

I am heavily into the Harley thing--Daytona,bike nights, runs, performance & cosmetic upgrades;Cotee River Bikefest coming up next month, etc. Ride an '07 RoadKing with some nice performance upgrades. The one thing about that is I can enjoy it on my own; with steel I hafta rely on other band members to make music.

Harleys, pedal steel, & guitars. I mean...what else IS there!?

Now there's a couple of beautiful bikes!

Over the years I've spent some serious time on outdoor activities like Fly Fishing, Hiking, Sport Parachuting (way fun!) and so on, but it seems over time my "hobbies" have all become centered around music: teaching, collecting recordings and teaching materials, building and maintaining recording studios, and hacking away on new instruments. I'm finishing up a build on my newest studio and it will be the ultimate "Mark cave" for all that stuff.

I do love to read as well, nearly anything. I frequently read at stoplights… Before n after: Image

My wife and I have participated in sighthound rescue for just over 20 years. Love those pooches.

And yes, I also have the obligatory Harley. Nothing like cruising the country roads in this area.

I have stuff.
I try to make music with it.
Sometimes it works.
Sometimes it doesn't.
But I keep on trying.

I'm into my Vette, hunting, shooting ( high power and black powder ) trains and classic cars. Of course, my music is on top of the pile.

I'm very fond of sport-hammocking. First you find a beautiful spot, with two trees pretty close together, then you... well, you get the picture, I'm sure... ;)

I'd like to take up fly-fishing someday, when I'm 'older.'

In the meantime, it's arts and crafts; I like to take something like this from MvA's cave project:

and turn it into something like this, a new house for an old amp.

The chassis on top came from an old Crosley clock radio; the clock I needed, the chassis--there's always steampunk.

Bass-fishing in my 21' bassboat & trains.

Sometimes I combine them as the "CSX, Chicago Line" runs along the Mohawk River here where I live. The Smallmouth fishing is awesome and the train action is busy. Plus, there's a great boat-launch less than 5 mins. from my house. Pretty cool !!!

I build model railways. I have an extensive layout in my basement which takes up two rooms and part of the crawlspace.

Image
Image
I build and play mediæval musical instruments.
I've been fascinated with early music for many years.

I take stereoscopic (3D) photographs. To view the aircraft photo in 3D you need a pair of red/cyan glasses, as I've displayed it as an anaglyph.

I have a lifetime interest in railways. Here I am at King's Cross Station (London) in 1958.

My other hobbies include Genealogy, Archaeology, Cosmology, Linguistics, Ancient Languages, Model Aircraft, Model Ships, World Travel, Dioramas, Movies, Genetics, Computers, History, Plate Techtonics, oh, and also Star Trek. ;-) :D

In addition to playing steel guitar, my hobbies include classic cars-my favorite classic car is the '57 Chevy Bel Air, being Uncle Brett to my niece Evie and new nephew Ahren(pronounced Aaron), I also love riding in the car-it don't matter where, just as long as I'm in the car with the radio or cds on, taking trips to the beach, the Great Smoky Mountains, and Dollywood-my favorite themepark in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. I also love to listen to other styles of music-'50s, '60s, 70s, and '80s-I was born in the '80s, so I love to listen to songs I heard as a kid, and I love songs from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. I'm also a fan of cats-there are a few cats who hang around my house, I also have a Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii-my favorite game on the Wii is actually my favorite game show on TV, Wheel of Fortune.

I'm a pilot, airplane builder, motorcycle rider, fisherman and of course gun "accumulator."
If I'm not in the air or at an airshow, there is either a firearm or fishing pole in my hand. Ive shot competitively all over the United States and I usually let Mother Nature decide if I'm flying, fishing, shooting or picking. Truth be told... Music is my greatest love.

I like to do pencil drawings. Right now I'm working on a series for a kid's book (not little kids) about toads made of food. Here are 4 of them. I've done 16 so far over two years..
