I recorded these songs live in a band I was in. At this time, I owned 3 different guitars, and often borrowed a friends guitar. I'm not going to name the brands. There are 4 different brands to choose from.

Just remember, it may not be the brand I am using now. It may not be the same guitar on all tracks. These songs were taken from 3 consecutive Sundays. All played through a Nashville 400. Recorded into a Korg 32 trackk digital recorder using an SM57 mic. Reply with your guesses by the number assigned to each.

Easier to tell using headphones.

This should be fun.

2) Whiskey Bent & Hell Bound

The first 2 could be Sho-Buds, the last one is anybody's guess, but it is NOT:

Emmons,Zum,Franklin,etc.

None are PPs, but they all have a very traditional sound. maybe a Mullen?

It would help if we knew the 3 brands you played. Why do they never get the steel as loud as the guitar. Can hear it but way below guitar. Here's my guess and I don't know what brands you have played.

1. Kline
2. Carter
3. Sho-Bud

No Emmons and no Franklins

Best if listened to on headphones. Steel and guitar mixed left and right.

Brands not listed on purpose. Lots of players say they can tell what kind of guitar is being played.

No push/pull or Franklin. But I wouldn't discount a LeGrande 3. Not saying that is a brand used. But, could be. That is the guitar I could borrow.

These were not the final mix. I never got a copy of those that I know about.

I have another that I tried to post but I keep getting the copyright notice about the Harry Fox Agency owning the rights, and the video will be blocked in certain countries, including the USA. Haven't figured out how to fool them on this one. I have been able to get around them in the past.

Richard,
Most of it sounds like a legendary Sho~Bud to me, but what I did notice is: I hear a lot of great playing that I'd be proud of, if it were mine.

Here's 2 more. 2 different guitars were used on "Standing Room Only". Can you tell which one did the "melody" parts and which did the intro, turn around, backup licks?

Standing Room Only

And this one should surprise you.
Much too young to feel this damn old.

Thanks. I did own a Sho~Bud Professional at this time, but it wasn't used on any of these. So, now you can eliminate Sho~Bud from the mix, at least on the original 3 songs.

That would be no fun.

Here are some you can eliminate:

Darvin Wilhoit did a similar "blind taste test" a few years ago. IIRC, most folks could not distinguish between a PP and an MSA ..... Just goes to prove my theory that how you sound it's all inside of the player. No magic pills, potion, or the most expensive gear in the world is gonna make you into the next coming of Buddy,Lloyd,or Papa John. Now go ahead and call me dirty names ! 😁

OK. I'll admit that one of them, in fact, was a push/pull.

Then I'm guessing the third song (Old Country) is the P/P. Don't know why - never played one, never heard one live. But wow, Richard! That's some great stuff! Was this recorded at a performance, or basement recording? Whatever, you sound great!

Richard, I think that on Standing room only, the Williams is playing background and Carter doing the lead. Of course, They could be EQ'd different but believe Carter has more bite than a Wiliams or mine did anyway
Much to Young I think is a Kline. Just a little more body than the Carter on first.
By the way, really great and tasteful playing, no matter the guitar.

I'll change my first guess on the 3 songs. Number 2 is push pull and number 3 is Legrand. Not sure about first song.

Richard,

I don't have the ears/experience to ID the guitars. But I sure do like your playing!

Old Country caught my attention. I used to have my hair all curly like that. Yeah, back when it was stylish, and I had hair, lol.

I bet you miss that Kline. Steve T. has a nice one for sale. Laughing

Best,
Dan

OK. "Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound" was a push/pull S10 with some kind of Lawrence pickup, but I don't remember which. That was the borrowed guitar. I only played it for one set on one of the days. He was a jammer that came to our jam session that one time and disappeared. I can't remember his name either.

Henry's right about "Standing Room Only". Both the Williams and Carter had E66 pickups.

"Pour Me Another Tequila" and "Old Country" are the Carter I still play today. The Williams and Sho~Bud had to go because of hard financial times. My Carter now has Lawrence 710's, but those recordings were with an E66.

This was kind of fun. I maybe should have let it go longer.

Recorded live at a jam session (open mic, live karaoke really) our band used to do every Sunday. This was back in 2008. We had a friend who is a professional recorder that came in for the 3 Sundays. Our band played the first set alone. Jammers could come sit in for 2 songs. This was to capture songs for a demo that never came to fruition. My Nashville 400 was close mic'd with an SM57. He had some kind of splitter that all vocal mics could go to the PA and the recorder. It was done so well that you can't hear the crowd much. He recorded us on a Korg D3200 hard disc digital recorder.

Forgot "Much Too Young". That was the Carter also. I love my tone on that song the most.

The fourth choice would have been a Fessenden S10 that I repaired and switch it from Emmons to Day setup. I meant to post a song with it, but don't like my playing on the songs I used the Fessy. Compared to other Fessendens I have seen, this one was a piece of crap. The owner had pretty much beaten the crap out of it. He didn't know how to take the guitar out of the case and broke the end plate where the legs screws in. He had someone who did some horrible welding on it. He is the guy I sold my Sho~Bud Professional to, along with my 2nd Nashville 400. He has dropped off the face of the earth.

Yes Dan. I really miss the Kline I had. That was the best guitar I ever had. The one Steve is selling is an awesome guitar.

And, "Standing Room Only" had all parts recorded direct. I lived in an apartment and couldn't get amps loud enough to get enough gain going to the recorder. I played all the parts on that song. Piano, Bass, Rhythm Guitar and Drums were all played on a Korg Triton synthesizer. The lead guitar track was played on a Tele by me (I do not play guitar, by the way), and an acoustic guitar track done on my Ibanez Acoustic electric.

That was a lot of fun recording. Took me months.

Great idea, Richard. I sure wish I could get Youtube in China but it is blocked. Would have been fun to do the test but also to listen to your playing .

I must agree with what Dustin wrote regarding that thread by Darvin W. :

"Darvin Wilhoit did a similar "blind taste test" a few years ago. IIRC, most folks could not distinguish between a PP and an MSA ..... Don Robinson, thanks for mentioning my Kline in a positive manner.

Steve.. I'm rebuilding my website from the ground up. I will be posting my videos and audio so there will be no need for YouTube or Soundcloud. I hate both. I may add this to my current website so you can see/hear my stuff. I will also be hosting Mickey Adams videos directly on my site so people don't have to get redirected to YouTube and their ads.
