Just got off of a Goodwill site and found several professional, chrome snare drum stands.

They looked like good possibilities for making a lap steel stand.


Anyone ever give that 'consideration'?

Ray, I have used a snare drum stand to hold my Rickenbacher Silver Hawaiian. My only concern is the actual floor spread of the legs of the snare stand. Some have a larger diameter footprint than others. Regardless, the positive clamping action on a snare stand makes for a very secure attachment of the lapsteel to the snare stand.

It beats using an ironing board.

I also had a huge problem finding a good table to sit my lap steel on.
I didn't want to spend $200 to $300 for what was basically an ironing board without the board.
What I finally bought was made by On Stage and cost only $80.
It works great. Couldn't be happier with it.
It's adjustable for height and the table is the perfect size and has rubber protection pads.
All I did was take out the adjustable legs all the way to lower it more because I always play sitting down.
It also folds up for transport.

Hmm; I bought a Yamaha snare stand to go with the YDD40 drum machine I acquired a few months ago. Haven't had a chance to try either one yet. I s'pose a single drum stand wouldn't work too well, even for seeing how it'd hold my SX Lap 2. (The Lap 2 has the screw-on legs. Haven't tried those yet, but I'm not crazy about them.)

The On Stage stand looks like it might also be handy for the Miracle piano that's been sitting around here unused for a couple of years. I'll bet somebody more mechanically inclined than I am could think up a way to rig some adjustable clamps on that stand to hold a lap steel steady and not mar its finish or get in the way of playing it. I have a couple of ideas, but need to see if anyone makes suitable parts for the project.

I like the retro look of those stands -- similar to the antique 3-legged steel guitar stands, but sturdier (and not rusty).

I used to use a simple music stand with the part that takes the sheet music adjusted so that it's horizontal. Many music stands will allow you to do that.
