I second John's opinion, '500' has the definite edge! Many players claim that the 'Session 500' was the best sounding steel amp ever produced by Peavey, but there was just cause for the nickname, "The Hernia 500"..In that same vein: Currently own one of these units if you happen to be interested, all original and in near mint condition it is just too much amp for this 70 year old to tote any longer.

"The Hernia 500"
"The Backbreaker 2000"
"The Peavey Shoulder Dis-locator 500"
But yeah, The 500 is by far my favorite sounding steel amp, but it should come with motorized wheels and a hydraulic lift.
Hope this helps Wayne.

I know this is straying off a bit, but IMO the Nashville LTD was the best sounding amplifier Peavey ever made. Of course the JBL that was in it didn't stand up to much abuse like the subsequent Black Widow speakers. Great amp, though.

Nashville LTD? No such animal. If you mean the LTD, I put it at #3, tone-wise. The LTD said just LTD on the front, and "Series 400" on the back.
Between the two in this thread, the Session wins hands down.

Sorry Lane, I should have just said LTD. My mistake. It's been over 20 years since I unfortunately got rid of it. And as I said, in my opinion it was the best Peavey amp (sound wise to me), as the 500 is to you.

Never had a Nashville 400, but my Dad does and I’ve been around it enough to say, “Could somebody help me get my Session 500 up in the truck?... cause I’ll be playing through the 500, if somebody, anybody will just give me a hand loading the beast” Laughing Laughing Laughing

Of the 2, I would say the Session 500 would be my choice. But the 500 I had kept dying, and was under warranty, and even an extended warranty the music store gave me because of so many problems. They finally just took it back and gave me a NV400. But, when it worked, the 500 was awesome. Mine ws just a lemon as there are probably thousands that didn't have the problems. But, the music store was a Peavey warranty repair station, and couldn't keep it running. I wondered why they never sent it back to Peavey.

Plus, I was younger and stronger in those days.

Looks like the lift would be as heavy as the amp.

Yeah, I think the 500 would have the edge, But the 400 sounds great too. Two of my favorite amps. Oh yeah, My brother in Fort Worth, just snagged a 78 Session 400 on Craigs List for $250.00. Spider web speaker. Amp and cover Immaculate condition. He just needed to clean the pots. T.L.

It's a no brainer for me. I have had two Nashville 400's and currently have two Session 500's that don't work. Anybody want to buy the "guts" from the two non-working 500's? I think the cabinet and speaker would cost more to ship that it's worth. If you have a speaker cabinet and do a split, I think the weight would be manageable if you don't have a hernia or bad back like I do.

The 500's were always the best sounding Peavey amps that I have owned and I have had every steel amp that Peavey made.I think they are about 95 LB. If I could handle the weight, I would get these repaired in a New York minute.

I have been told that the 500 is the only amp that Joe Wright will use.

I like the 500. but you are right Dale, it is a heavy amp. I used to use Roxanne, my wife as my ROADIE. She used to TOTE my 2 Nashville 400's. That was before her series of back surgeries. Now she only totes my POWER STRIP and my SPEAKER RACKS. Some time she will tote my PAC SEAT.

I'm quit sure the 500 I have, with the pre amp and power amp divided only weigh's in at 70 pds. The old fender twin reverb about 63 pds. Like Richard said, theirs a lot heavier s/// out there that people have to bring to the gig. You want to sound good tote the weight! Actually, back in the day I was only a weekend warrior, and for professional musicians that play a lot more jobs lighter alternatives are probably necessary. Tenn. Lee

I use a Session 400 and a Nashville 400. This was my answer to the back issues. Bought a used stair lift on ebay and fabricated a platform in place of the seat. Works great Smile It would be great for the 500

Lane, there was a Nashville 400 Limited. I had one ( Junk ). After the Nashville & Vegas 400 and before the Nashville 112 and 1000.

Sorry to pull away from the topic, but after talking to my brother again he said the amp was only $200.00.
Thats all the seller was asking. Now that's a great deal for a Session 400. T.L.

Here's something I bet no one has seen, as I have only seen 2 in my entire life & I own both of them--Peavey Renown 400 w/1-15" BW.
Every Renown I have ever seen came with 2-12"s.

I had one of the early Session 500's which was about the size of a Vegas 400...then came the monster bigger cabinet. Even the smaller cabinet weighed a ton. Good tone though, and I liked the "remote" Phase switch that clipped on the steel leg. The term Hernia 500 was so apt....I had one Laughing
