If you were going to teach a bginner to play pedal steel, what would you start with? I mean, if you put it into a beginner book, what would be included?

Of course, it would be different for totally new musicians compared to guitar players converted to steel. How would you teach the 2 differently.

I was thinking of starting a guy with 1, 4 and 5 chords and just playing along with background tracks. Then move to the 2, 3 and 6 minor chords.

Possibly then, move on to practicing scales with background tracks. The scales could then be turned into melodies.

What do you thing?

I would ask them to read the educational sections at www.pedalsteeler.com for starters. I would tell them to find a teacher as that is the single most important issue facing the fledgling steeler.

Jeff Newman had the best course for beginners, with his old steel guitar monthly course. 10 books, set up with 4 "weekly" lessons per book. He did start with playing the basic chord groups to a 1,4,5, track, then on to more advanced concepts. I think Jeff got it exactly right with that course.
