Folks:

My little group is adding some Dire Straits tunes to our set for the next year. The leader wants me to do the lead for "Money For Nothing".

Any suggestions as to some effects I may want to look at getting to get something close (not necessarily the same as) to the guitar lead for this song. I have distortion and compression but has a little too much brassiness for my likes. I may not be able to get there on my axe, especially using really bright GHS Super steels.

Just looking for some good ideas to maybe buy while I'm in the states on Thanksgiving leave.

Thanks and happy holidays to all.

Ricky,

as far as I know the sound was achieved with a wah-wah pedal in addition to the distortion/overdrive. An auto-wah will not work.

Turn the wah-wah pedal on and slowly push the pedal until you have the right sound. Then take your foot off. The wah-wah acts only as a filter. There will be no pumping the pedal à la Hendrix or the Shaft theme.

Maybe you can dig up an old Vox or Dunlop Cry Baby or a newer replica. They work better for this sound than the thinner sounding Morleys.

So Ricky, just how little are these folks who play in your band?

A graphic EQ can get you the same result as a wah-wah set as a notch filter. Off the top of my head, I'd say go into a Tubescreamer or similar overdrive with that tone set at about 1/3 or 1/4 of the way up, then into a graphic equalizer set to emphasize the 400mhz, 1.6k and 3.2k slightly. Cut the 6.4k a lot. Set the 100mhz, 200mhz and 800mhz flat. Depending on your guitar and your other tone controls, you might have to fiddle with the 800mhz some - that's where the midrangey Les Paul tone is found. To blend with the band you might have to cut the low end back some too.

Compared to me, they're all pretty small!

Also, thanks to all for the info.

re: brightness---I'm not an expert or anything but I believe that Knopfler picks with his bare fingers. Could be some tonal nuance there that may be of interest.

Right. You'll want less sustain, too. I use a glass bar when I need to sound more like a standard guitar.

The traditional pedal steel combination of metal picks and a steel bar was designed to mazimize sustain. It you play barefingered you can't pick as hard, so the string won't sustain as long. Switching to a glass bar also reduces sustain, and it changes the tone to give you less of that 'brassy' sound.

I played "MOney For Nothing" in a band and I played straight steel. There was nothing wrong with it. If you want to sound like the guitar parts on the record, lay out and let the guitar player play them.
