The buzzing happens between mid-neck and pickup. Most strings buzz.

I'm pushing down firmly with the tone bar. To stop the buzz, I really have to push down hard.

Maybe my strings need changing?

I'm a beginner, so wondering.....

Sounds like you are not "muting" the strings behind the bar. Make sure your fingers are touching the strings behind the bar.

What Jack said. Old strings MIGHT do that. But they would have lost their ring.
If you have a video camera or a smartphone, you might try taking a video so we can see and hear what's going on.
