I've been having bad luck lately finding new music (new to me) to listen to. Does anyone have any suggestions? To give you some guidance, I'm thinking stuff similar to these songs: slow, quiet, reserved:

Isn't it? That's why it's so hard to find anything comparable. I remember thinking that Mike Johnson was on steel. It sounds like he's improvising.

My closest guess would be Emmy Lou, but I don't think so...

More along the vein you've described is Iowegian Greg Brown. I especially like "Blue Car." With some imagination the tremoloed electric guitar part would translate nicely to steel:

That hits the spot!

For about 30 years, I've liked Lee Clayton for that sort of music - kinda alt-countrty, kinda Dylan, and kinda Willie, all rolled up in one. He does some real hard-edged stuff, too, but that's probably outside of the type of music you're looking for.
