I'm refurbishing a '57 Fender Stringmaster D8 that I got some time ago. It is very nice and in great condition. However, it did come with one of the front neck's two pickups missing. Fortunately, I was able to obtain a replacement from the same era for that missing one. However.....

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the dual pickups on each neck of a Stringmaster are wound out-of-phase. That is, one of the neck's pickups is wound one way and the other the opposite. Then, when both are installed together in the same neck they (I'm guessing) cancel hum. Something like that.

Anyway, is that true? And, if so, how do I determine if the neck's pickups (the original and the replacement) are truly out-of-phase? Can I use a meter to find that out?

Any help or info is appreciated. Thanks.

It's very simple... take a small magnet and verify that the poles are reversed... You have to have RWRP (reverse-wound, reverse-polarity) to make a humbucker. If the are the same then you'll get hum.
