I've been working on some stuff after I dug out the "Manual of Style" and thought I'd make a comment about learning stuff.
I realized that something fell into place while trying to "get" one of the tunes. I was renewing my acquaintance with "Jeremy"-- a beautiful waltz composed by Terry Bethel. I had played it long ago when the book first came out, but the details sort of slipped out of my mind.
So I'm looking at the tab and realized that 1.) I was really interested in some of the places Terry got stuff because 2.) I was finding some of it in other places.
And then the whole question became *making it mine*-- playing it until I find the best place it sits..for me. It might not be exactly like Terry plays it, but... I'm not Terry!
And I realized that all the tunes I play I've "made my own"-- I've played with them, played around them, learned how different people did them and finally found the way *I* play it.
Like with "Danny Boy"... I learned it from tab as one of the first songs I learned. Then I got the tab Buddy did (the Black Album). Then I listened to Chalker do it-- and several other folk.
I finally made it mine when I found it sat best for me in "E", and now I have MY "Danny Boy."
So... learn all the stuff from all the folks, but always strive to make it yours-- to play it like YOU play it and not like someone else plays it. It becomes very much fun at that point!
End of rant.

Winnie, thanks for the encouragement. By listening to and learning from others, and not stopping there, we can figure out who the heck we are on the instrument. Great post! |

Hey, don't you guys realize that if Buddy Emmons didn't play it, it's wrong?

Hello Winnie Winston,
Just wanted you to know that years ago, I purchased your book "Pedal Steel Guitar"with the pedal steel floppy record inside..it is a fountain of knowledge and I still go back and read it from time to time, and look at the pictures and I still work on some of the tabs in there too. Thanks for all your hard work in the steel community and for being there when I needed it..... |

This is probably one of the best pieces of advice that anyone could give. That is what makes Buddy - Buddy, Lloyd – Lloyd, etc.
Good luck on your new project and looking forward to more neat stuff.
