Do any of you know of any good Pedal Steel Teachers in Chicago?

I live right in the city about a mile from Wrigley field.

The catch is I don't have a car, so I need someone in the city that either has a pedal steel for students or can come to my place. I can't feasibly lug my 70 pound Sho-Bud LDG all over town on the train and buses.

Any ideas?

A friend of mine lives in Chicago not that far from downtown, I believe near Irving Park. His name is Brian Wilkie and he is a great overall musician. He plays guitar and steel ( an early 80's push pull Emmons ). He isn't that much into computers, so I will ask him if he is interested in giving lessons and get back to you.

While I don't know Brian W personally-I know that he seems to have become one of the main players in the area since he came up to Chicago-I am not sure if Chicago's longtime players Tommy Furlong or Paul Carastia are teaching any these days-also I know a few other locals who have been taking lessons from Ken Champion-He is in Cary,IL.

I do know Brian Wilkie...I used to do sound for a wedding band he plays with. He's a great guy and helluva six-stringer. He also picks some sweet steel with local bands Cornmeal and Majors Junction, etc. I would like to get back in touch with him...I could use a few lessons myself Image

Cory, I emailed Brian's number to you. I think he is leaving town for a week starting tomorrow or the day after. Let me know if you got the email.

Thanks Bob. I did receive your email.
I'll wait a week or so for Brian to get back in town and then I'll give him a call.

Thanks again!

As mentioned Ken Champion is a great player and teacher. He has a number of students in Chicago, and will come to your house. He can be reached at 847-516-4322.

I seem to remember once upon a time Ed giving a befuddled young man some lap steel lesson...me! Maybe Cory can coax a few PSG sessions out of him, eh? What do you think, Ed?

Hey Brian, I thought that was you. You know he'd probably be a lot better off learning from someone of the likes of Brian or Ken. I'm still struggling with the Winnie Winston book. That Nashville to Bakersfield piece is a bear. Stop by the stor if your in the neighborhood.
