Last year i was visiting the Science Museum in Phildelphia.
There was a very old (1980's) science/music project that was simply amazing. I will describe it below but what i was hoping, was that that someone here knew of computer age software that could duplicate what this amazing machine could do.
It had 5 basic melodies that it could then transform into any of the following:
1)Mulitple harmonies
2)any other mode (minor, Greek, etc.)
3)any other scale (Just, mean tone, etc.)
4)improvise 3 different ways (reverse, inverse, reverse-inverse)
It was truly an education.
I once met a bass player who could do all this instantly on demand also.

The sound was primitive but the purpose was just to educate about music theory.
Not sure what you mean by "lay out" unless you were just kidding- obviously the machine could never have the ability to compete with a human, or have "taste"- when to play and when not to play
Again, this was an extraordinary machine, a great education!
