Shorty Ashford and the Country Rhythm Boys. They also recorded some singles with a young Jackie DeShannon. Who was the steel player. Thanks in advance!

Hey Joachim, I think it might be a guy named Basil Smith. I haven't found anything about him except he is a steel player and his name is listed as a musician on Shortys record labels. Check out Shorty Ashford "Turkeys in the Pea Patch" on utube, somebody comments that Basil is his wifes father and thinks he played steel guitar on the song.
But maybe not "Sweet Lucy" was from 1966 and the above song was from the 50's ??? |

Thank you Will. Maybe someone local will chime in, I think the band was from Indiana. _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |

Yes they were from Indiana. There was a record label out of there that recorded lots of "hillbilly" music in the 50's. cd's of this music is on Amazon. |

I don't know if Basil Smith is on "Sweet Lucy", but he apparently manufactured ZB steel guitars from 1985 on in Evansville, Indiana. I believe he was killed in an automobile accident in the 1990s.
There was a post or two about him and ZB many years ago on this forum.
He recorded at least one instrumental in the 1950s: "Basil Smith Stomp". |

Whats the matter Herb, old timers disease setting in? Basil Smith was his name. He was killed in a car accident not long after he bought the company. |
