It's a fine time for steel guitars in Pop music contexts. There are several (fairly) recent recordings that highlight the steel guitar outside the usual Country-related genres. Bob Dylan's new "Shadows in the Night" with steeler Don Herron contributing prominently to the lush yet sparse arrangements. Say what you will about Bob's singing, but his band absolutely kills on this.
Bill Frisell & Greg Leisz "Guitars in the Space Age" from last year (how did I miss this when it came out?) revisits classics such as Pipeline,Telstar, Rumble and Rebel Rouser(!) with their near-telepathic improvisational flair. Leisz is just about my favorite contemporary steeler.
There is also Steelism 's "615 to Fame" album which explores other aspects of pop instrumentals with a 60's bent, with nods to Ennio Morricone, Monty Norman and John Barry. They remind me of my youthful journeys down similar paths.
And last but not least, The Vanduras have recently shared some works in progress for their second album; their first eponymous recording has been a consistent component of my commuting/gig-travel playlists since it's release some years ago. I am very glad they are working on new material. Reverb drenched surf-noir with steel guitars...

Here's a link to a Vanduras selection https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcrYQPAIcGY&list=PLol0eBsZhgMZ9-HH1q-znQuyLrEOlnUDt
In The Dark in particular is that lonely sea. This stuff is seriously great. I can almost begin to see the term--what is it--
ambient, but who thought of that with the Ventures?
Surf music is what pedal steel was invented for.
Eponymous gracias, Dave.

Oh yeah, Greg Leisz and those space age guitars is amazing.
The very idea, playing folk music along with Telstar.

But really, the Vanduras 'The Big Hurt'--if that didn't come from Hawiian music, what did?

Oh Goody! That Vanduras CD is one that just won't stay banished from the rotation for long.

Just don't tell Perlowin or Cohen, it'd mess 'em up bad.

Great thread Dave. We should all be talking about these artists more often. I am looking forward to checking out the vanduras. I share Charlie's feeling that steel is great in surf rock.

Thanks for the update Dave.

'The Vanduras' 'in The Dark' is always on my CD players.

I especially like 'Theme for Troubled Teens'

It's great to hear that they are doing another, can't wait for it

Looks fun, Jim!
The Vanduras stuff is fantastic. The steel player gets a great rhodes-like sound on a couple songs. Awesome.

Trey Pollard id a steeler I hadn't heard of before buying the new CD by Natalie Prass. Trey is part of the 'Spacebombs' collective - check out Matthew E White's 'Big Inner' album too. No idea how you'd classify their music but it's a sort of orchestral Muscle Shoals - strings, horns etc. Trey also arranges much of the music on Natalie's album. The pedal steel is back in the mix, but it's there. Interesting stuff.
