Does anyone know who played the slide guitar parts ( I think it was steel with some overdive or distortion on it) on Terri Clark's version of Poor, Poor, Pitiful Me?
Thanks in advance for any info, Larry Robertson, Colorado

Unfortunately Allmusic just shows "Terri Clark - primary artist" on that album. A different album by her released a year earlier shows Sonny Garrish on steel and lap steel for what it's worth.

Paul Franklin is listed on pedal steel and lap steel, so on the second record featuring Poor Poor Pitiful Me, it's Paul. Sonny was on her first record, playing the steel on "Better Things To Do, "When Boy Meets Girl," and "If I Were You"

Thanks guys, I sure do miss being able to know who played on the recordings. That info, along with the song writers, used to be on every record. I guess it is indicative of our society's disregard for musicians who work like crazy to perfect the craft of music. Everyone thinks music is free and nobody buys it and everyone can play music so it has no value to anyone. Sad situation Sad

Larry, I respectfully disagree. I think it's more likely today to have credit given to all musicians than in the past. Keep in mind those early Terri Clark CD's or albums are from 20 years ago or so. I think there was much less awareness back then of how many musicians were required to give the star or big name group the sound which finally was heard by the public. Certainly not 100% to either extreme, but IMHO things are better than they used to be.

Don, I think you are right if talking to musicians. But where do we find the info discussed if we download music from the plethora of online music services? the info is also not available from the streaming services. The ID3 tag that can be attached to an MP3 file barely has room for Artist, Album, Copyright, & Date. Maybe I'm missing something by not downloading the album art, which is where we historically found the credits. I have been hoping for a database that would list all the credits for songs. Lord knows we have plenty of other databases and search engines. I suppose the answer to that would be: who's gonna do it and how to make a profit out of it?

I agree with Don about the credits thing being more prominent today than 20 - 30 years ago.

As far as credits not being available when you download songs or albums, that is the price we pay for convenience. We would rather download the CD, so we could have immediate gratification, than to order the CD and have to wait. That's one of the downsides of this advancing technology.

Well, I think you guys are both right.

I was speaking of my experience in buying a CD, reading the accompanying paperwork, and usually seeing on that, the various supporting musicians. I'm contrasting that with my younger days when I would buy a 33 1/3 album, which more often than not only gave credit to the big name or names.

Now where Larry is right - or MAY be, I can't say first hand - is in downloading. Being an old guy I have not come into the 21st century (as my kids remind me) and have never downloaded a song or CD yet. (Can you call it a CD when it's NOT a CD? It's not an album, it's not a cassette, but it's maybe a dozen songs that....well, anyway.... Laughing ) So it may well be that the limitations of whatever file is used have once again relegated the sidemen and studio musicians to comparative obscurity.

I often use allmusic.com to search for info on who plays on a given song. Sometimes with success, other times not. And I know there are other similar sites out there.

And, Allmusic.com isn't always accurate. I have submitted changes more than a couple of times. Some when they leave out the steel guitar player all together, but the album (yes it's still an album - a collection of works in a single source. ex: CD, Picture album, etc...) is just oozing with great steel guitar playing.

Although not perfect, this website does a pretty good job for country IMO..

Barry, I don't understand how the site you linked us to has any bearing on how to find out what the credits are for a song. All I saw was a bunch of dates when some files were updated. I want to be able to search for a song and find out who wrote it, who the musicians were on each track, and maybe who the producer was. Maybe I'm missing something on the site you recommended. Can you tell me how this site shows that info? I don't even see a search box.
Thanks, Larry

Sonny did the older stuff with Terri. Paul did the newer.
