I am just so HAPPY that John Scofield found hissef: playing weird over conventional structure, instead of beating his brains out trying to write palatable "outside" (AKA weird) songs. All those stints in Martin, Medeski & Woods and Phil Lesh and Friends got ahold of his "Focus Knob" methinks. He's a boogie-woogie ROCK GUITARIST! Just a really smart one with a huge dose of weird.... All those people saying "there's no good music anymore!" - Yikes. Whoa!

I like this OK, but John's real gift is his writing. I think he was a pretty major influence on the direction of writing tunes for guitar-led jazz ensembles, especially his John Scofield Trio stuff (all trios that include Steve Swallow). Yes, John is a tremendous improviser, but just as good a composer, IMO.
