Are most threads on rods rolled or cut?
I have Two high speed landis threading heads that I have retired and am thinking about seting them up to thread pedal rods and pull rods.
Also what size rods are the most popular?

Hill,
Like soo many things, they are not standard.
Same for the threads. Some are cut, some are rolled.
But most are 3/16 " SS and they have a 10-32 thread.

| The changer rods are usually 6-32 and or 4-40. Some could also be 5-40. Most of the ones I have seen are rolled threads. |

Could you explain what "Some are cut, some are rolled" means to us in beginners machining class?

Bob this is my understanding.
1. Cut is when they use a die or lathe to "cut" the threads.
2. Rolled means the threads are actually pushed up in a rolling twisting manner; that ends up with the threads actually greater in diameter than the rod was originally. I have also heard it referred to as "stamped".
Note some Emmons' LeGrandes I believe used this latter method.

On the Carter, Emmons and Remington guitars that I've owned, the pedal rods are 5/32" in dia. with 10-32 threads. The threads are formed, not cut. I believe that it's done this way [rolled, or formed] because the process is more easily done on automatic machines. A 5/32 rod would be too small to thread with a 10-32 die.

If the rod diameter is 3/16" (.188), the threads will be CUT. If the diameter is smaller (around .167) they will be rolled.

FYI
My 2 landis heads are on a double spindle machine that turns CONTINOUS, they open automatic for removable when the required amount of threads is reached. the threading tools are similar to a bar 3 inches long and about 1 1/2 inches Wide 1/2" thick with grooves equal to the threads per inch required the length of the bar. they are called chasers and 4 are required.
The operator don't get much idle time when operating both heads,
