Morning, All,
One question.....
On tuning a FIDDLE...what are the strings tuned to?
I bought a OLD fiddle for $50.00 at a yard sale last Thursday morning, and would like to start playing this thing, but, I gotta' tune this thing first.
It is about 130 years old, and I'm taking it to "Grun Guitars", (George) in Nashville to have this thing "Appraised" It is a "Statavarious (Spell?) COPY, Folks, NOT the REAL DEAL.....Even tho I wish it Were.
Thanks... VERY well Kept over the years. The case is almost new, and the latches are very strange...never seen case latches like this. Everything is ORIGINAL... |

Standard tuning is GDAE, low to hi. Strings might be really old. Slap a set of Dominants on her and she'll come to life.
I would take it to a repair person first.
good luck,
Drew

When changing strings, be sure to change them one at a time, so the bridge will not collapse. Also, if it does not have them, most steel string fiddlers use fine tuners on all four strings. If you don't do it often, tuning with the wooden pegs is tricky. Also, before tuning, look inside and be sure the sound post, an upright post about pencil width, is in place between the back and top in the vicinity of the bridge. |

Many thanks, Drew, and Leon,
And yes, it does have the pencil"GeeK" strut inside, and yes, she is going to a Luthier first for her LONG awaited "SHOTS"..:eek"
I will post as to how much this thing MIGHT be worth.
And, Mr. BoB, you can close this if'in ya want. |
