Just a heads up from personal experience. Most Carter owners have read on the
forum about the possible issue with brass dogbone wear in the bellcrank. Well
yesterday I was changing strings on my 07 D-10, and lubing and I decided to do
a preemptive inspection of the dogbones on pedals A, B and C. Sure enough
the dogbone on pedal A string 6 was worn really thin. Luckily I had some spares
so I replaced it. It was worn so thin that I put it between my thumb and forefinger
and bent it!
This guitar gets played a lot, which is a testement to how much I like it. I think the
construction of this steel is pretty bullet proof, but this is definitely a failure point
that needs regular inspection and maintainence.
It is a pain to slide out the pull rod when the dogbone is in the bottom of the bellcrank
because the head of the torx screw can be in the way, and may need to be removed.
Well worth it though if one of these little parts were to break on a gig.
So I want to share this experience to help other Carter owners avoid a possible
problem. I think I need to call Al Brisco and order some steel ones!
Sorry for the weird layout. I wrote this on my iPhone. |

I actually lube critical dogbones in hope that it will cut down on friction.
So far..so good.
I also carry spares.

I lube often too Howard. It doesn't seem to prevent it. |

I've been warning paople about those dog bones for years. I have had two break on me. Both times on stage. I replaced the dog bone on my A,B,C pedals with the barrel and socket head cap screw thingie they use for the intermediate rod on the knee levers. They work great. I made new straight rods, and didn't cut the hooks off the existing rods, just in case it didn't work.
Those dog bones are the weakest link on a Carter. A huge mistake. I don't think Al has steel dog bones, but maybe he started recently. I brought up the fact that they should have been stainless, and forget the reply I got here as to why they weren't. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . I think it was to have the dogbone softer than the rod. Reverse that choice and the ROD breaks after years of use. The softer material goes first. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

I have a friend that brought his GFI to me because said it wasn't playing good. Found that the brass barrels that hold pull rods worn down to almost nothing and had deep groves from bell crank. Looks like Carter not only guitar that has issues in that area. I replaced them and he's a happy camper. _________________ Henry Matthews

Truck clutches use ceramic "buttons" that are harder than the flywheel (and amazingly grippy. 6 buttons not much bigger than half dollars can transmit 1850 lb/ft of torque), so clutch jobs usually need flywheel replacement. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Is the oil impregnated brass that is in machinery parts like bushings available as milling stock?
That would be a nice fit for a dogbone unless its tio porous to have strength at a small scale.

Being a newbie to all the maintenance that needs to be done on a PSG, has anyone every made a video of how to properly lube a guitar? I know Mickey was going to make a full-on total maintenance video, but it would be nice to see a simple video of lubing the parts in the undercarrage. |

Thanks Ken. I've been on Greg's website before, but did not see that page. That will help tremendously. And a big thanks to Greg for putting that information on your website! |

Before I bought my Carter U12 last year from John Roche, John had replaced the most commonly used dog bones with stainless steel versions, he also supplied a bunch of spares of these.
I believe he had them made by Bent Romney, of Benrom fame. Not sure of price, I don't think they were cheap, but then if they're going to cut down on failures, probably worth it. _________________ "Nothing can ever be wrong about music" - D Allman

I replaced all mine with brass collars similar to the system that MSA used no more problems and a lot easier to work with than the dog bone system.
You can get these off Amazon, they work great.
All you have to do is very slightly open up the bellcrank hole for the pull you need, there is a rodding chart to follow so it only needs the pull on the bellcrank hole for the pull rod on the pedal that needs the barrel.

I used to call them barbells. I switched my A, B anc C pedals over to the barrel and screw unit pictured. I made new straight stainless rods for them. Works like a charm. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) .
