The auction's over. A stock Sho-Bud 6139 sold for $1225. Hard to believe, isn't it?

I know of an identical guitar (the serial number was only 9 counts away from this one), also in the Buffalo area.
It sold on this forum, in the last year, for $900. It took several months to sell.
eBay is unpredictable, like any auction.
I've seen used Jeff Newman courses sell there for more than the identical new ones that are still available at Jeff's website.
You always have to be careful, but I feel safer here than on eBay.
Do a Google Search for "ebay scams" for some interesting reading.

The only thing you can't get on ebay...is a bargain! 
The sheer size of the ebay audience in comparison to the Forum audience (perhaps a million times more?) is what accounts for most of the price difference. I'd say 99% of the members on the Forum have heard of ebay, while probably far less than 1% of the people on ebay have ever heard of the Forum. There is also the "auction fever", which adds to the effect.

| The problem with trying to sell a Guitar on the Forum is most everybody on here has a Guitar and they are looking for a deal not a Guitar.I've had a Sho-Bud LDG on here and I got 4-5 people wanting pictures but no sale and it is half the price that Bobby Seymour wants for one in his store. |

I totally agree with Joey on this one. The Forum is the only place to work a deal. I've always been happy with every person I've talked to on some of my equipment. I didn't know these people from adam, From Canada, Washington State to W. Virginia, and quite a few others,, its just down right fantastic. if I had a problem,,,I've even had phone calls at their expense to try and help me out. could E-Bay offer that type of help? I dont think so. then to add iceing on the cake,,,to have the chance to meet these same people face to face, is a true pleasure. the one and only regreat I've had was not meeting Joey Ace in Columbus ohio, at a show I did a few weeks ago. buy on E-Bay,,nope , not me...I'll stay,keep, and support the Forum in whatever way I can. There's some good people on eBay, probably most of them, but in any crowd of a few million there's bound to be some thieves.

Ebay can have so,e great deals and some incredably ridiculous prices at both ends of the spectrum.
To judge Bud's prices on ebay is not so realistic, but if you are willing to be patient there are some deals to be had.
Forum prices seem to more reflect reality.
Even if sellers want a high deal and buyers low, it is possible for both more knowlegable parties here to do well.

| It seems to me that the guitars that sell for stupid money on ebay are almost always Sho-Buds. I think there's perhaps just an audience of people who've kind of thought about maybe playing one, and that's the only manufacturer they've ever heard of... so they drop $800 on a rusted out, half-dead Maverick. The other two that seem to get a fair shake are MSAs and Emmons'. Other than that, prices paid are not that far out of line from reality. |

| I'd be leery about anything bought on ebay and add $200.00 for setup charges. The forum is a great place to buy a used steel. Almost all I have seen have been fairly represented. Its not that big of a community and if anyone wants to pull funny business there would be ramifications. I sold one steel that was damaged in shipping and offered the buyer to send it back to the manufacturer at my expense for repair. He was very impressed and wound up fixing the problem himself. Fortunately it was minor. |

Ebay is totally uneven and depends a lot on the luck of who happens to be watching and how much money they have in their pocket at that moment. Recently I saw a Crossover with one knee go for around $1,300, at nearly the same time a Super Pro (8 & 4) went for around the same price. Which would you rather play?
Likewise, earlier this year I got an early Pro II in mint condition with a Sho Bud volume pedal and the original case in new condition for about the same as this guy paid for a Pro I. It's true that my Pro II needed a new knee lever bracket, but that was around $50, still a good buy any way you look at it.
Even so, I still feel a bit queasy buying a pedal steel on ebay -- there's so many unknowns that can't be revealed in pictures. Buy from any of the established, reputable steel guitar vendors and you don't have to worry, but you pay for that security. You get what you pay for. There's no free lunch. Etc, etc, etc.
Fortunately, I'm done buying steel guitars, so I don't have to worry about that anymore. Ha! |

Geez, guys... didn't mean to stir up a hornet's nest.... just trying to help guys selling Sho-Buds. I've bought 2 Buds off eBay, and couldn't be happier with them... but I've been trading on eBay for years and I know the ins and outs of it. I agree that it might not be the best place for a novice to buy. On the other hand, the best place to sell your item is where you can get the most money for it.
While I too have noticed inconsistencies on eBay, I'm a student of this market and it's a good yardstick of what an instrument is REALLY worth, not just what some "expert" says it's worth. In the end, a thing is worth what someone's willing to pay.
BUT, in the interest of **PROMOTING THE FORUM**, let me say how much I appreciate the great service provided FOR and TO the steel guitar community! I don't want there to be any mistake about where my loyalties lie.

| If I was a newbie looking for a Sho-Bud and went to the Steel Guitar Nashville web site I would see that Bobbe is selling a S10 with 3 pedals and 2 knee levers for $1495. Not knowing what a great guy Bobbe is and what triple raise and double lower means, $1225 for a guitar with one less knee lever and including a volume pedal does not sound all that bad. |

I would encourage newcomers to NOT buy on ebay -- there are just too many questions that you need to know to ask. Plus, established forum members who have developed reputations for integrity will provide very good value. I've seen better deals come up on the forum than I've ever seen on ebay, and you only have to go through the old buy and sell pages to see that for yourself.
Personally, I like to separate my support for the forum from my steel guitar purchases. I think direct donations to b0b or buying forum items is the best way to help out. |

| I would like to add one other point, and that is I think older sho-buds are going to continue to increase in value faster than other used steels. Look at what has happened to the prices of stringmasters over the past three years, I expect classic sho-buds will follow the same pattern. Especially since you can get them retrofitted by Duane Marrs with totally modern mechanics, giving you steel with classic sound and looks but modern playability. |
