Rod changes for 1st and 6th strings

Post by Tony Orth »

Guys,

I now have the 1st and 7th strings both raising a full tone. I would like to switch to the 1st string 1/2 tone raise, and 6th string full tone lower. This is on a 2002 SD-10 Emmons LeGrande II.

Can someone give me a starting point as to which holes to use in the bell cranks and changer end?

Thanks

Most certainly this info is only of limited value because it isn't on an Emmons and every guitar maker uses different leverages. But here's what I've got on my Carter with an unwound .020 on the 6th-----

1st string 1/2 step raise is in the middle of 3 raise holes at the changer. And it is in the 2nd of 5 positions on the bell crank, 1st being farthest away from the guitar body.

The 6th string lower is also on the 2nd of 3 holes at the changer, and is in the 3rd of 5 bellcrank positions (middle). I'll be curious to see how this compares with other responses you receive.

Tony, check your email. I have sent you a copy of a rod chart for 14 hole bellcranks.

Tony, I have these two changes on an Emmons Lashley LeGrande. I would think it would be similar to yours. Any way, here goes:
!st string raise: Center hole of three at the changer, and at the bellcrank, the second from bottom, with bottom being furtherest from the crossrod.
6th string lower: Bottom hole of two at the changer, and second from bottom again at the bellcrank. My bellcranks have four holes, and the changer is triple raise/ double lower. Hope this helps.

The best advice I can give you is to give Emmons a call. They KNOW which holes are best for WHICH changes. When Jack Strayhorn was there, he could call it off the top of his head.

I am sure Ron Jr can too. Give him a call,

Thanks guys.

This is a great starting point. And, I think a call to Ron would be in order.
