I have recently aquired a 75 D10 Emmons push pull that has a basterdized pick up set up. There is a pentad on the C6th with the pentad contol panel. The E9th pick is a stock single single coil that was wired directly to the output jack, while the pentad set up was cut off. My dilemma is to replace the pentad and it's contol panel with another single coil pickup and panel or to replace the single coil with another pentad. How good does the pentad set up sound and exactly what does it do? By the way, the E9 pickup was not even soldered to the jack, but had the wires wrapped around it, was laying loose in the mount and had the top of it's cover unglued and God knows how old the rusty strings were, it still sounded great.

BRUCE, I put a Pentad on my old S-12 DEKLEY. It really expanded my possibilities. The first two positions are humbucking (bright&mellow),next two are single-coil sounds (bright&normal),next is an out-of-phase sound, and there is actually a sixth position which is a bit thin but is unique.
It really is a highly advanced design;certainly worth trying before throwing in the scrap heap. To get the most out of it, you will have to have the five/six position selector switch. Have fun!
