Hi Lee! I do all the time. I find it a fascinating technique, and even if I had knee levers on my guitar, I'd probably still do it by slanting.

I sat in Charleton's living room and watched him play Danny Boy with just the A & B pedals and slants on the E9 neck. Scared the heck out me that you can make that much music with so little.

That's how I learned to play steel. Use them all the time on E-9th and C-6th PSG. It would be hard for me not to use slants. Too many years of doing it the origianl way.

Slants are often carried over from years of playing non pedal.I find that many friends still slant the bar on pedal steel but not while pushing the pedals. You use slants where you do not have the changes set up on on your guitar. <FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Andy Alford on 31 May 2003 at 12:48 PM.]</p></FONT>

You betcha, I use them all the time - forward and backward. Jimmy Day was a master at it as is the "Big E" and Dicky Overby "ain't to shabby at it either". I personally prefer the sound of a bar slant vs. the pedal change.

When the album with Buddy Emmons and Shot Jackson came out with "I'll Be All Smiles Tonight", my steel was a "coat hanger and rubber band" model with no knee levers. I proceeded to learn the song and that was my introduction to the use of bar slants, forward and reverse, on the E9th tuning.

......After playing with slants for years on non-pedal steel, I spent many agonizing hours learning to replace them with pedals.

After all that hassell of learning to play with pedals, I'm not about to start learning all over again to play with slants!

I slant on pedal steel, but I don't usually combine slants and pedals. That is too complicated for me. I just slant to get things that I don't have pedals for, or to get the sound of the slant in slow tunes.

Pedal A, strings 3 and 5 with a forward slant, resolve by straightening up the bar and push A & B pedals. Another is strings 5, 6 & 8, forward slant and whatever lever you have to raise the E. B pedal is down, release the lever, straighten up the bar and push A & B pedals. I think this is right, last time I posted string #'s it was all wrong. Must have been the juice,,yep it was

I don't understand that, Gary. Here's what I think when I read it: <font face="monospace" size="3"><pre>F#__________________________________
D#__________________________________
G#_____6 -----5B____________________
E _____/_______|____________________
B _____5A-----5A____________________
G#__________________________________
...</pre></font>It looks to me like you are "resolving" the slant to the same note pedaled. Is that what you meant?<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Bobby Lee on 30 May 2003 at 09:58 AM.]</p></FONT>

I think he meant to say reverse slant. At least that's the way I do those licks. Image

Lets play in Bb and we just happen to be on the V getting ready to resolve to I. At fret 13, pick strings 3 & 5, slant the bottom of the bar forward one half step and press A pedal. Straighten out the bar, still on fret 13 with A pedal still engaged and press pedal B. The forward slant raised the 5th string 1 1/2 steps. Use your imagination and you might find MANY useful ways to use this and don't forget to half pedal A too; where you might feel it. I guess the most valuable use for this bar slant stuff is that it looks cool to other players (not necessarily steelers) who may think you don't know what you are doing. Image

I've found myself when playing more than once that it's easier to do a slant with pedals down much easier than doing a pedals down, pedals up moving the bar a distance, then back to the start with pedals down etc. I found the same moves by holding pedals down, and doing a slant, only 2/1 frets closer, and having 2 less pedal movements well... just makes more sense to me in all aspects (less pedal movements, shorter bar movement etc).
