Who was the steeler

Post by Glenn Shankle »

Lee Ann Womack and a pedal steel just did the anthem before the Cowboys game. Who was playing steel? They never showed a clear shot of the player.

Very sweet tone. He stayed in lower octave range and played very full chords. That was how our National Anthem should sound. I give Lee Ann a lot of credit for knowing what she needed to make it a great performance.

Wonderful job, Paul! 8) Now that's what I've been talkin' about, folks. Steel playing featured, lots of it, and not just with that old "call and response & remember not to play while the singer's singing" mentality...proving there's more than one way to play this thing. I'll take that kinda stuff, any day, over the minimalist "just one or two notes" stuff that so many here preach about.

And also, a BIG thanks to Lee Ann. Looks like I'll be addin' a couple of her CDs to my Christmas wish-list. 8)

That was profound, total perfection and class, my friends.

I sure was shocked when I saw only the lone pedal steel.
behind Lee Ann, and this this grey headed gentleman setting there behind it. Wow what a backup. Made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. Hope someone recorded this. Out standing.

I like to think that the crowd is cheering Paul Franklin's sweet, sweet resolve at "Wave" here: http://youtu.be/8zgHg9n7vbo?t=1m49s rather than the flag shaking choreography.

Real question: Could this be the largest audience -- counting stadium and TV -- that a solo steel guitarist has ever played?

I was very disappointed that the producer of that segment didn't see fit to give the rest of the world a clear shot at seeing what instrument was making that sound. I loved how Paul grabbed the high note usually reserved for oversingers at the "land of the free" mark.

Denise and I were pleased that Lee Ann didn't sing the "Whitney Yodel."
2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects
