What's the deal with the foam?

Hello all, just a quick, possibly dumb, question: During my daily viewing of "steel guitars for sale" where I pretend to have money to upgrade to a better steel, I've noticed in some of the photos of the underside of certain guitars there is a chunk of foam in between the rods, sorry don't know the technical name. I'm just wondering if there is a reason that the foam is there?
Thanks

And just FYI, the technical name for it is "foam".

it's spongy stuff that keeps the rods from rattling.

It's the memory foam I secretly cut out of my wife's $100 pillow

If your uncarraige rattles, something's loose

Henry, Zum and others using comb-style bellcranks have looseness in the design.

When steels have leg extensions the angle of the rod to the pedal changes forward and can cause a speaking noise as the rod rubs against the front apron. You can use foam or tape to fix this. What's that speaking noise on the track?
