My two-piece case....

Post by Roger Rettig »

Since having some abdominal surgery just over two years ago I've had to be more careful about what I lift, and the weight of a D10 in a case is far too much.

I'd often wondered about a case made of fibre-board (like drum cases) and what options there might be. My thanks go to Jay Andrews - he referred me to Woody Woodell in Hendersonville who made me a two-piece case in this very material! Pedal bar, legs and rods in one, and the Emmons body in the other - even I can manage it easily!

If my steel is going to get thrown under a 'bus for a few weeks then I use the excellent wheeled case that Bob Dell made for me - otherwise it's Woody's creation.

Highly recommended!

I had a third case made at the same time to accommodate my Steelers' Choice ' Sidekick' - total cost was around $275.

Woody's actually in Goodlettsville (not H'ville) at woodywdll@aol.com. I have one small criticism which I didn't foresee - I should have asked for the smaller case to be made an inch shorter than the main case, then it could be stored inside the bigger one and take less space when out of use. The main case is lined with foam to protect the guitar, and this is unnecessary with the accessory case - it could, therefore, be made shorter.

I don't have the vaguest notion how to 'post' pictures - just use your imagination and visualize two black oblong boxes Image (like a drummer's traps case).....

I have been using two cases for about three to four years now in an effort to cut some of the weight associated with a D- 10 and all that goes with it .

I talked to Bruce Zumsteg -since I play a Zum ,for his recommendations as to who might build me two cases . He was quick to recommend the person who , at that time, built his cases . His name was Gene Fields . I contacted Gene and he built me two very fine cases that I use to this day .

Jim Smith -- I assume you know Gene and if you are looking to "ease that load" , you might contact him . It will cut some 30 + lbs off the total . I have been glad I made the step into two cases .

When I got my single 14 Sierra it was too much to carry.
I found a place in Philly that made fiberboard drum cases, and they made 2 cases-- one for the steel, and one for the pedal bar and all the other stuff. It was great!
Still have the original S-14 coffin. Use it to ship lots of clothes when I travel.
