Other Uses for Lock Levers?

Post by Bobby Lee »

Some U-12 players have a "lock lever" that locks the E's lowered so that they can play in B6th mode. I wonder if anyone uses lock levers for anything else.

For example, there are a few songs where I lower strings 2 and 9 (on the E9th) to C# for the whole song. When we recorded these songs, I actually retuned the strings so that I wouldn't have to hold the knee lever in. A lock lever for strings 2 and 9 would be real handy, I think.

Any other ideas for lock levers?

I just have a slight variation to the standard E to Eb LOK lever. Mine ALSO lowers the 2nd string to a C#.

Some U-12 players do this on their E to Eb lever. I find this much too stiff. But putting it on the LOK fits in perfectly for me.

I need it in songs that work from the harmonic minor scale. We have one in Am and another in Cm. In those songs, whenever I play the 2nd or 9th string I always want it tuned to C#.

In Am, I'm usually at the C positions (1st, 3rd and 8th fret). In Cm, I'm usually at the Eb positions (4th, 6th and 11th fret).

I have 2 locks on my Sierra.
I have alot of changes that I sometimes use and sometimes back off at the endplate tuners.
On my S12U I lower all 3 E's and D# to C# on RKR.
But D# to C# takes more of throw than E to Eb, and I only really use that change when I'm playing an E9th gig in a band situation, so I typicaly have the D# to C# disegauged, and have RKR adjusted for minimum throw for just all 3 E to Eb's.
Sometimes I disengauge the string 11 E from lowering if I'm playing in the 6th tuning, but I like to use that change for 9th stuff.

So on my other lock, the primary change is D# to C#,and I lock both locks when I go to the 6th tuning.

I also have F#'s to G all rodded up for this change lock also, as I have some tunes I like to do with the F#'s tuned to G.

It's all good, Maury! Image
