Perhaps this has been touched upon previously but I can't find it.

Is it possible that too many folks here on the SGF have their mind set on "Chops & Licks" instead of actually playing the melody of a song in several different locations and keys along the neck?

I've found that the more songs I could play gave me the fundamentals for finding 'licks' or 'transitional chords' all up and down the neck. They simply fall into place.

Having to memorize and/or practice dozens of licks and then attempt to find a place that they might fit while your playing with a group........seems to be overwhelming.

What say you?

I am just now figuring that out. I have started trying to play along with songs that do not have any steel guitar in them so I can't "copy" something that has already been played. I think its going to be a big help. Makes you think!!! Very Happy

The best "Licks" I've found are snippets of melody. Or a snippet that then had some ornamentation applied.
And then I learn melodies, slice them into segments of phrases, making new licks out of old melodies.
But it HAS to start with a melody. Maybe not the original melody of the song everyone else is playing, but some kind of melody.
