| I just bought a MSA the U12 sunburst lacquer pedal steel. Sounds like a dream! the problem I am having is setting it up. The pedal rods were not marked well, kind of hodgepodge thing, and i am trying to adjust myself. Is there anyone who can give me any tips for setting up an old MSA? Cant seem to quite get the pulls in tune/balance. Thanks in advance. |

Mike doesn't work on his own guitars. Tom Bradshaw does them for him. Tom is great with those old MSA guitars.
I've had a hard time balancing pulls on them myself. There aren't enough leverage points - some of the bell cranks only have 2 holes. Not a lot of options there.

Tom, remember that, in addition to the 2 or 4 holes on the bellcranks and the three holes on the fingers, you can also affect timing by leaning the bellcranks over: if you have them to stay near vertical, they'll pull faster than if you lean them towards (or away from) the changer.
Which pedals or knees are troubling you?

| I think I have managed to get it in tune by adjusting pedals and tuners but I honestly dont really understand what bell cranks and fingers even are. Been playin my D10 Emmons all pull for 8 years and never had to really do much except adjust the nylon pedal tuners. I did move a rod on C6 to pull another string. Ron L. walked me through it. To tune the B6 side I am engaging the lever and then tuning the 4 B6 pedals. Seems to be working. I just am a bit green. I sure am liking this steel though. Really love the E9/B6 thing. A bit getting used to the lever thing but I think it will be second nature after a while. |

Silly me. I thought you were wanting to futz around with rearranging stuff underneath, and adjusting pull timing.
If you just mean how do you tune it, you do indeed seem to have the hang of it.
The B6 pulls would get tuned while holding the Es lowered.
I'll be happy to talk you through it on the phone after about 9 your time tonight. I'm supposed to be asleep now, but I'll be driving all night (don't worry, I'm hands-free).
