I am having a lot of trouble learnin' steel, so I have ordered instruction materials from b0b and from Joe Wright, but until I get them I have changed my copedant:

Finally a copendant I can understand

I got my first steel in May of 2002, and have used Dewitt Scotts instruction book, and I bought the whole set of 6 videos from Joe Wright (very good stuff). It seems overwhelming at first, so much to absorb at once, but keep on pluggin. It took me several months just to learn to tune the dang thing.

It is helpful to find someone else who plays pedal steel, and pick their brains. In my case, it is Bob Baringer, a fellow forumite, who is my mentor. Anyway, there is lots of help and inspiration on this forum. Here's where I'm at in less than a year. Now don't you pros laugh to hard and hurt yerself... I don't want to get sued

a 3 string PSG...What a wonder... As back to basics as I have seen. You might spring for a 4th string next week, just to get full harmonization. Just wait till your get the books! Good luck.

Hi David I wasn't being snide.. I don't think. Actually I thought the copedant kinda cute!
And you can certainly make music with it.
But you can't practice the cross picking between several strings and that's important technique. And strings can ring after being picked too. The grips are a big part of PSG.

Well, Mr Donald,

I sincerely hope you don't think I was being snide either. I was trying to be funny, or silly, myself.
The point I was trying to make is that I have been a musician for about 36 years, I play keys, horns, sax, guitar, drums, bass, etc... but is my fist try at the pedal steel. Originally I tho't I'd pick it up real quick, but... instead, I have seemed to develop a deeper level of appreciation for my favorite pedal steel players!

It's all in fun, and I was just acting stupid. Heck, I've so many bad things happen in my life that now I laugh along with most anything!!

I am FAR from an expert on PSG, but thought at least 4 strings would make a quorum!
I definitely got the humor, but wasn't quite sure how serious you were about any of it actually. People do do unsual things in this world.
Six strings seems the minimum no matter how you look at it pedals or not.
So mebe youze was havin us all on!

18, 14, 12 well it sure should twang! Especially when played with a Zippo

Hi guys.
How about a D1 with one E string on the E9th neck and one C string on the C6 neck.Or maybe a Single Universal with 2 strings (one E & one B).No pedals,no levers,no changer.Just a pick and a very short steel bar.Cheap,lightweight and EZ to play!

There's a one string japanese instrument you play with a split stick with the string in the middle of the split... You could play that with a steel hairpin!
