I've got the pedal rack disassembled for cleaning and maybe some attention to spacers.
Before reassembly, should I apply to the axle--
--light oil (household type)
--white lithium grease (both of which I have on hand) or
--something else that I should go out and get?

I'd think either grease or Triflow.

Right. It's still, AFAIK, white lithium grease, with Molybdenum disulfide added.
