I have an early 70's Standel Custom with 2 12" speakers which has the speaker wires "rigged" so I don't know how they were originally. They are 8 ohm speakers and I don't know if the amp needs a 4 ohm or 16 ohm speaker load. Can I somehow measure the amp's output to determine proper speaker? Any help?
I think the speakers are dragging and I think I would like to use a 15" speaker but don't know which ohm speaker it needs.
Thanks,
Jerry

sadly, you can't just measure the output jack to determine the impedance. there is a specific way to measure the output transformer for tube amps (and a way to figure the impedance of the power tubes), but i don't know about solid state amps.

that said, i have a standel custom with a 15" alter speaker that has an 8 ohm impedance.

my bet is 4ohms. of all the schematics i've looked at for standel amps, i have seen 4 and 8 ohm impedance, but never 16ohms.

it's more common for the speakers to be wired in parallel.

Hi Jerry,

If I am reading this right, it's looking for a 4 ohm load:

http://www.standelamps.com/support/schematics/documents/1970/custandstudioguitar_serv.pdf

clearly you will want to verify that this is the correct schematic for your amp. I hope this helps!

I have a Standel Imperial 15 piggy back amp. No reverb. Came with a JBL 15 inch speaker that was/is a 16 ohm speaker. For whatever that is worth.

I have several 15" speakers mostly JBL 4 ohm and a couple 8 ohm speakers. That is my reason for needing this information. Thanks for the responses.
