Topic: What are these parts on a ZumSteel? |

What's the purpose of the flat crossbar on the middle of the underside of Zum's and some other brands of steels?
And sometimes attached to it are several rods going to the changer, or somewhere, what's that all about?

| Hi! John, On an older Zum I owned, a rod was attached to the crossbar and back to a lower on the changer and used as a return compensator for my fourth string E on a single neck. The fourth string would come back a bit sharp after a lower and you could correct this condition by turning the nylon tuning nut at the changer end which was attached to a lower finger. I don't think that the newer Zum's require it and I don't know what they would be used for on other brands. |

My 1994 and my 2001 both have tuning compensators on them.

My 2006 has it. Is it a compensator or counter force?

The original purpose of that bar is to keep the aprons from warping. Bruce used it to anchor his compensators to since it was already there.

Yes ditto to the above ...it's used to attach the return compensator rods to ... Bruce still uses this method as my 2014 Hybrid has them fitted

| There are more than one type of compensator. They are talking about return compensators not temperament compensators. |
