Elementary question

I hate to come in here with questions like this, around so many of you that are pros, but anyone who feels led to answer, I'll appreciate it!

Okay, in a standard E9th tuning, (using NO pedals or Knee Levers)--If I put the bar over the first fret will that change the tuning in half step increments like this:

F# G
Eb E
G# A
E F
B C
G# A
F# G
E F
D D#
B C

And then so on and so forth, up the frets?

Or am I trying to absorb too much at this point?

Yes Kenny ! keep movin up a fret and keep adding the half steps/tones as you go up
so on and so forth like you say
do watch what you're absorbing since you're gettin' started

Howdy Kenny,
Welcome! I'm a rookie of almost 2 years now.
For starters, get yourself an E9th chord chart. (Mel Bay Prods. puts out a nice one for about $5.) This will familiarize you with all notes and your more useful chords.
Secondly, get yourself a book called "Pedal Steel Guitar" w/CD by Winnie Winston/Bill Keith.(Amazon, Ebay, etc. from $12 to $23)Best damn book out there.
IMHO, those are 2 of the wisest buys I've made since starting steel, also recommeded by most of the pros on here.

Have you bought a bar yet? Picks? Volume pedal? All these essentials can be bought online too.

Do you already play six string guitar??
I have just started PSG after playing 6 string for along time. If you do play six string already, I have some good news and some bad news for you.......

The good news is that everything that you already know about 6 string is applicable tothe PSG........

The bad news is that there is still alot to learn..........

I think that it would be much more difficult to learn PSG with out a background in six string guitar. Anyway best of luck and the folks on the forum are a great source of information. Regards,Fred

Hey, thanks everyone for the replies. I feel better each day about learning PSG b/c of the awesome replies I get from yall and from what I've already read on here.

To answer some of those questions--
--I have a bar, that was machined to have an "ergonomic" fit in your hand--I don't have any calipers so I'm not sure of it's diameter--I may check out some stuff on the thread about 7/8 vs 15/16.

--I do have pics, cables, and amp already. I ordered my Carter-Starter through Musician's Friend, so along with it I bought a vol pedal, chord chart, and I've heard of that Winnie Winston PSG book w/cd and I will be getting that also.

--I have played 6 string guitar for 14 years so I'm glad some "rules" will translate and I'm excited about everything I'm going to be learning.

Again, thanks to each of you for helping me out--it's greatly appreciated.
