Anyone have any experience making one? I'm thinking of using bass string ball ends and a nail or drill bit. _________________ I wanna go back to my little grass shack........ |

I would think you would need pretty tight tolerances to have the nut be really stable. You can buy the ones people have on pedal steel guitars pretty cheap and you can probably get the steel rod they mount on without putting out much money at all. Then you just have to figure out how to mount it on YOUR guitar. It seems like a lot of effort if the string changing tension isn't part of your playing style. On a pedal guitar or a 6 string bridge with a vibrato tailpiece setup string tension is going up and down on individual/groups of strings and nut or bridge friction is the culprit for strings not returning to pitch. But it would be a dubious effort for a non-pedal steel I would think. _________________ GFI Ultra U-12 7+5 E9/B6, Roland Cube 80XL, Telonics FP-100 Volume pedal with TMRS remote sensor (courtesy of Dave Beaty and Telonics) |

I can understand a roller nut on a pedal steel as the strings are moving due to pedal and knee lever action. However, on a lap steel it may be over kill? I say try anything to see if adds to the playability and sustain. |

I need a new nut,so I think it would be easier and cheaper to make one than to buy one. _________________ I wanna go back to my little grass shack........ |

I made one not long ago for my palm bender six string. This is about the only reason for such a nut. I turned delrin for the rollers. I didn't use the brass string ends as they are all the same, as far as string guages I like to cut for each string. I would use Delrin for the smooth/slip part you want in a nut but cut it from a solid piece. I also turn my own slides (steels) drill the center out and add lead to get the right weight. I have used the current one for over 4 years with no wear and no string noise. |

Since I don't have a buch of precision tools and what not I will just have to experiment with a few different ideas _________________ I wanna go back to my little grass shack........ |
