Looking at getting a Quilter Aviator Head. Per Quilter's on-line manual, it says:

"(Outputs)
Aviator combo amplifiers come with the
internal speaker plugged into the INT
SPEAKER output. An external 8 ohm
speaker may be used in place of the
internal speaker by unplugging this cable
and connecting the external speaker. An
external 4 ohm speaker cabinet should be
connected to the EXT SPEAKER output."

OK, now I'm confused. It wants an 8 ohm speaker but a 4 ohm speaker cabinet????

I have a Mack Gem combo amp with a 10" Rajin' Cajun' speaker loaded at 8 ohms in a Hammond OT. This is from the Mack Amp website: http://www.mackamps.com/articles/guitar-amp-speaker-ohms

"The speaker jacks in Mack amps are wired to the 8 ohm tap on the output transformer. However because of the relatively low power output of our amps (under 50 watts) and the high quality of the output transformers (Hammond) and the tubes (JJ), they are perfectly happy to have any impedance speaker cabinet plugged in. At the voltages and power levels that we run, the output tubes and the output transformer never come close to being damaged."

Can I use this speaker with the Quilter Aviator head without having a disastrous outcome?

Thanks guys and gals.

Read one paragraph further:

"To use two speaker cabinets simultaneously, connect an 8 ohm cabinet (or the internal speaker) to the
INT SPEAKER output, and connect a 4-8 ohm
extension speaker with a minimum of 200
watts continuous power handling to the
EXT SPEAKER output. Internal circuitry
adjusts the output impedance to split the
power between the two outputs"

So INT is 8ohm capable, EXT is 4ohm capable. The amp will divide the power evenly. Both outputs are 200watt.

The Ragin' Cajun is a 75 watt speaker... there is no scenario in which disaster could be averted by connecting it to this monster amp. You will blow it up.

Stephen,
Thanks for the reply. I feel like the dumbest kid in class.

So, the Aviator amps (the 8, 10 and 12s) are using speakers that can handle 200W? The 12" uses Celestion Classic Lead 80 speakers that are rated at 80W. I don't understand why those are OK?? UGH....

Just when I think I understand.......I don't. lol

It's really "only" 100 watts per channel, and you can't run both channels at the same time. I have been using one for a while now and really like it for both steel and guitar. I took the head out of its cabinet and mounted it (with Velcro) in the bottom of a Rick Johnson single twelve cab. I just installed a Telonics speaker, which doesn't sound as nice as the D-120 I had been using but it still sounds pretty good and is a lot lighter. It's a pretty great "grab 'n go" amp, loud as hell too. Quilter's manual is confusing and downright obnoxious in its attempt to be entertaining.
