making a big trade with Steve Stallings who lives in central texas for a remington D10 - I've played guitar for 25 years and I've always loved the lonesome wail of the pedal steel on anything I heard it on, in particular Bob Dylan TIME OUT OF MIND and Steve Earle GUITAR TOWN (yes I am a rock and roller) - and I just couldnt take not having one anymore. I stumbled upon this forum, joined up and next thing I know I have a trade in the works for one and sold a couple other things to finance the trip and we are on our way! Driving with two girls age 6 and 18 months 1400 miles round trip in 4 days. my wife is staying home because she is in the army in Drill Sergeant school and is on "the range" this weekend. I'm so psyched its ridiculous. Spending the nights with friends along the way and eating out of an ice-chest - gonna do this on $150 cash round trip - man I hope the gas prices don't go up another cent!

Man that's devotion! I know exactly where you're coming from. A long drive is far better than trusting shipping companys.

I did a 1200 mile round trip over two and a half days last week to pickup a guitar!
But that was without kids!

700 miles to get there..it will probably seem like 7000 miles going home with your new Steel.

Sounds great.

My most recent trade/negotiation/deal was only about 15 miles away , so I got to BS quite a bit at Joes house and then had plenty of time to fool with the Steel when I got home, and still got to bed by 8:00...
just kidding..................it was 8:30

I know what you mean, a couple of years ago I drove from San Diego to San Francisco to buy my first Sho Bud... I was going to spend the weekend with friends and have a nice relaxing weekend... nope. I made it up there in 7 hours (600 miles) bought it, had lunch with a friend and turned right around and drove home, I couldn't wait to play it... 1200 miles in 24 hours, man was I glad to be home...

I know the feeling. When I got my push-pull, I answered an ad in the Milwaukee paper. The guy said he still had it. I told him to hold it and drove like crazy to get there. Everytime I hit a stoplight or got behind a pokey driver it was almost more than I could stand. But I got her boys. And mine was only a six-hour round trip.

I did the same thing last week! Drove 6 hours to pick up my JCH!

Tony you're right, the trip back seemed a lot longer!

Eric was here today and picked up his new steel. We spent some time on basic picking grips and the pedals, but how much can you cover in an hour... I also gave him the Newman Video "PSG Basics, I&II and some Newman Jamming tracks. He is really psyched about playing steel! He left with picks, bar, pedal and steel... and a gleam in his eye!

WOW ERIC,

And I thought that 400 km was far enough to pick up my Zumsteel S12U, that I bought from Jeff Newman years ago.
Don't discourage your kids with this drive; they then might become even more dedicated to steel guitar than you are!

The whole trip ended up being 1750 miles in four days, from 20 degree weather to 70 degrees and back - the kids were great but now I am sick as a dog with the flu and can't even play with the toys! But I can watch the video.......someone up there has a sense of humor! Did it all for $150 and the generousity of friends at strategic locations who provided crash pads - anyway I'll get back with you all when I kick this bug, and attempt to put the thing together =) -Ciao! -Eric
