I have The Byrds "Sweetheart of the Rodeo," 2 CD Legacy Edition set.
Who is the steel player, on "All I have are memories," (outakes)?
Lloyd Green, or JD Maness??
Whoever it is, he's pure genius!! Such tone, & taste!! I get goosebumps on my goosebumps!! WOW! Awesomeness. _________________ David "DJ" Rupert

The steel player on this track is the inimitable Lloyd Green.
Congratulations on finding these classic and influential sessions.
With Clarence White on guitar and either Mr. Green or JayDee Maness on pedal steel, this is the motherlode for me. |

Chris Ledrew (who's a Steel Guitar Forum guy although I haven't seen him post in awhile) posted this on another forum
http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=1044673&page=2
Chris said Lloyd told him that he and Clarence White had only met that day in the studio and just let it rip. Maybe Chris will chime in here.... |

Kudos to Kevin Kelley for singing this song! His drum rolls on "You Ain't Going Nowhere" were exceptional too. _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |

Thanks, for the reply to my post! Wow...this is great to know. Pure genius playing from Lloyd Green. Soooo tasteful.!!
I've always loved this album...but it's even better with the outakes, alternate versions, etc. I actually like many of outakes/alternate versions, more than the original tracks.
Thanks, Lloyd Green...for such excellent playing! My ears were glued to the right speaker on my stereo, last night...enjoying everything you laid down. Awesome.
Of course, JD Maness is awesome as well. Just something special about this particular song. I also really dig Kevin Kelly's vocals. Really blew me away! Kinda sounds like McGuinn. Definitely unique, in a great way!
Not to forget the genius of Clarence White. Gone way too soon! _________________ David "DJ" Rupert

Anyone know what equipment Lloyd Green used on these songs? |

I believe I've read that on You Ain't Going Nowhere Lloyd was playing thru a Deluxe Reverb (w/15" cab, I think?). You can really hear an aggressive growl. I just can't remember about the other cuts. |

Pete: you are partially correct!
I'm fairly certain Lloyd was using the Fender Deluxe with a JBL D120-F speaker described in this Vintage Guitar article (below) for most of the tracks ("You Ain't Goin' Nowhere," "Hickory Wind," etc.) but he apparently used the house Fender Twin at the studio when he went out to LA in May 1968 for the "One Hundred Years" sessions with Clarence White, et al.

I recently acquired a Fender Deluxe Re-issue with a JBL D120-F speaker...it's now my number one amp. It changed my life. Yes, it breaks up above Volume 4, but I run it around 2.5 or 3 and it sings. The tubes are biased hot and a little fan keeps them cool. I love it. |

The reissued and expanded versions of the Byrds 'Sweetheart of the Rodeo' and '(Untitled)' are simply awesome and a must have!
