could anyone recommend some tablature writing software (free online would be a plus Very Happy ) that is straightforward and easy to use? I'd be using it to tab out melody lines for 6 string lap steel. Having the option to insert lyrics would be useful. Would use it with a PC with Windows. thanks.

For free and online I can think of nothing.

But for free, you could use a text editor like Notepad.

Code:
------------0--3~4---------------0--2~3------------
--0--0h2---------------0--0h2----------------------
---------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------

Code:

————————————0———3~4———————————————0——2~3————————
——0——0h2————————————————0——0h2——————————————————
————————————————————————————————————————————————
————————————————————————————————————————————————
————————————————————————————————————————————————
————————————————————————————————————————————————

With the right fonts, you can add bar lines, repeats, note symbols for timing, etc.

The text file will be more portable than a tab file but will lose the benefit of being playable by MIDI like in most tab programs.

Either way you go, you'll spend TIME creating the tab.

Billy,
standard music notation plus/or chord symbols. For Steel tablature I use Tabledit.....the best. Costs a few bucks, but worth it.

Check out.........do a search for.....
ClicTab Steel Guitar Software. Quick and neat print.
It has other features besides creating Tablature.
Been using it for 17 years.

Also, one of the best ones is called Tabledit. Costs a little bit, but very nice, and professional looking when it is finished. I use it, and also Buck Reid uses it on his tabbed songs.
