into head and cabinet for easier carrying ? I am finding that I like the tone of the original speaker better than the light neo-speaker that I have, at least when playing my Jackson guitar. _________________ Emmons, Franklin, Mullen |

I have a Steel King head that I really like. I got it without the cab so I can't speak to that part of the equation. However, one great thing about chopping amps is that you can decide exactly what you want the cabs to sound (and look) like.
I just finally bit the bullet and got my Webb chopped. Not only does my back now like me better but I love that I can mix 'n match different cabs/speakers to different heads depending on the gig. |

The extra depth to the FSK cabinet makes it a lovely knee knocker to carry. You just can't lug it up a flight of stairs without fresh black & blue on the legs.
I know that people have done split cabs and it seems like a real good idea.
Like you, I tried a few different speakers, neo for weight, BW for tone experiment and a couple of others and in the end I, too, returned to the Fender OEM as the best matched speaker for this amp. |

Rick Johnson has made some split cabinets for the Steel King. Check out his web site.
http://rickjohnsoncabinets.com/
There is one picture of a Steel King head in gallery number one. The picture is number 19.
Back when I still used power amps or heads, I bought two 15" cabinets from Rick that were the same size as the ones he used with the Steel King split setup. They were a little larger and deeper than your average cabinet . I had them loaded with JBL K 130 speakers and they sure sounded good. I ended up selling them when I started using tube preamps with TC Furlong powered splits.
Here is what the speaker portion would be if you have Rick build you split cabinets. I took these pictures when I sold the pair.

Karen, I have a Peavey Deuce that was split a couple years ago. What Ray Walker and I did, was to use the existing combo cabinet for the speaker and then just built a smaller cabinet for the head. Instead of a 70# amp, I now have 2 lighter cabinets much easier to move. Just a thought |

One thing for sure is that you will need to keep the cabinet fairly light. The original Steel King speaker probably weighs in at about 25 pounds.

I have been down this road with the FSK and this is what I found out.
If you change cabinets, even with the OEM speaker, If you like the sound of your FSK in its origional configureration, the speaker (origional) will have to stay in the orgional cabinet. Be it a bruser or not, I could NEVER get the same sound any other way.
You can split the head no problem. That was my experience. others mat differ.

FWIW, that's exactly what I have done with a 59 RI Tweed Bassman... _________________ If my wife is reading this, I don't have much stuff....really! |

Karen,
I did exactly this using Rick Johnson's cabs. It was great and I could not detect any tone difference.
I have since sold it and it now belongs to another forum member.
